Session Summaries by College Essays Tutors

During this session, the student read her homework to me and finalized comprehension questions at the end of each story. She also read several books she had picked out of her collection that were challenging to her. I brought a blends/rhyming puzzle for her to work on during our session. She continues to move forward, and is becoming more and more confident in her reading. I discussed her progress with her mom before leaving the session.

During this session, the student worked on his language arts homework, specifically focusing on exposure to diphthong sounds [-ou, -ow], understanding parts of speech through the use of word maps for his assigned vocabulary words, and talking briefly about adverbs and their use. He and I worked extensively this session on refining his handwriting through repeated writing on the worksheets. He continues to demonstrate a growing autonomy regarding his homework, and is very responsive to small mistakes he makes when answering questions and writing out his responses.

The student and I did more work on adverbs and essay writing. We made a lot of progress on her understanding of adverbs, which has been rather shaky up to this point. She now seems much better at identifying them and the words they modify. We worked on the first body paragraph, and by the end of the session, we had a pretty good paragraph. I noticed that she has a little bit of a habit of inserting extra unnecessary words, and we discussed how it's better practice to cut out those words.

The student wanted to write her own poem today for an oral poetry reading assignment where each student must read a poem aloud to the class. She was determined to write her own poem about something she liked. She specified that she wanted it to rhyme and be about fairy tales. We spent some time talking about what makes a good poem and themes in poems. Then, she picked Cinderella as her topic. We looked up some sample poems to help her with an outline, then brainstormed rhyming words and discussed the importance of syllable numbers in poetry. By the time our session ended, she was prepared and ready to start writing on her own!

Today the student and I discussed the essay practice he did for "homework" for this session. He did an excellent job on the brainstorming outline -- just enough words to jog his memory and facilitate the writing of the actual response, which was concise and well-written. He had some questions about how to formulate a good conclusion. After a little bit of prompting, he wrote a very good one-sentence conclusion, which wrapped up the points he made in the intro and body of the piece. We went over 3 actual AP History answers from last year's exam, and discussed how the Readers go about grading the work. We first tried to guess what score each of the essays would receive, from 1-3 points; we were right on 2 of them! It's good to see the thinking, and the justification, of the Readers' scores.

The student completed a reading on the Newsboy Strike. We then reviewed lines from Romeo & Juliet, which he knew well. The focus of our sessions will be creating a study plan for his finals and reviewing his tested subjects at his mom's request.
