Tutoring review by Richard in Palos Verdes, CA
We went over sample assessment test problems. Turning the word problem into explicit mathematical steps is causing trouble. I encouraged him to do each step out loud, which helped him catch errors. Recognition of ratio problems is weak, so I went back to simpler examples which show how equal rates apply and how you can extend them to less obvious examples like pages per minute. He did well with the column comparison problems, and he learned to look at what is the same in each column and only compare what is different. We need to work on how you can factor numbers being multiplied to make certain things the same. We also discussed how to write the essay portion. Tutoring review by John in Palos Verdes, CA
This meeting took place on Monday, December 19. This was my last meeting with the student for this year and we will be resuming again in January of next year for more tutoring sessions. She had math and chemistry exams the following day and we spent the entire session prepping for those exams. For the most part, she felt comfortable with the Algebra II material since we had been reviewing exclusively this material for a few days. Therefore, the majority of the session was spent reviewing a large chemistry review packet given to her by her teacher. The packet covered everything that she had learned in class so far.  At the end of the session, she felt comfortable enough with the material to do well. She had some struggles with chemistry this semester, but I feel that she will do well on her exam.
