Session Summaries by English Grammar and Syntax Tutors

English Grammar and Syntax Tutoring review by Victoria in Chino Hills, CA
The student and I reviewed her chunks, worked on chunks with the letter u, as that seems to be a struggle for her. I had her write some words with the "ug" chunk and we worked with the new chunk "ub" (although relatively uncommon, it was good for her to work on the letter u and directionality--distinguishing b from g).

I evaluated the student by having her read various level books to find her target level. She read a book. We discussed after every page to help with reading comprehension. I taught various comprehension strategies to help her with thinking about the words she is reading. These strategies included a story map, sequencing, and note taking. We reviewed the meanings of punctuation marks, including the use of apostrophes. The student showed enthusiasm to learn throughout the session. I recommend magazines as extra practice to motivate her to read. The child is very bright; I can see future improvement coming soon.

English Grammar and Syntax Tutoring review by Katie in Chino Hills, CA
The student and I worked through a children's book together, "Froggy Gets Dressed." She reads at a moderate level and struggles with certain complex phonics ("oo," "ee" "ie," "augh"). Particularly towards the end of the session, once she had warmed up to me, she read more fluently and demonstrated recognition of certain more advanced words repeated throughout the story ("tugged," "flopped," "pulled," "took," "oops," etc.). She also demonstrated comprehension of most of the story throughout our reading and after. During our next session, she and I will focus on sight words.

English Grammar and Syntax Tutoring review by Kelly in Chino Hills, CA
The student and I had a great session today. We worked with her spelling words, and she did a great job learning the spelling rules. We used the letter cards to help recognize patterns in her words. Once taught the phonics patterns for her spelling words, she did a great job applying them both to spelling and reading. We spent the second half of the session reading "The Fox and the Grapes" from her textbook. She did very well decoding words. She still struggles with long vowel sounds. We will work on explicitly teaching this pattern next session.

English Grammar and Syntax Tutoring review by Patrick in Chino Hills, CA
During this session, the student did her reading homework, looking specifically at reading comprehension and grammar worksheets provided by her school. She seemed very excited to work on her homework and was benefited by looking at the worksheets as fun activities to complete while she learned. She did very well understanding grammatical concepts, as I taught her about past tense and present conjugation of verbs. We also looked at basic antonyms using a cut-and-paste activity. My plan with her is to continue working out of the assignments that her teacher provides in addition to providing an abundance of practice for her in the coming weeks.

English Grammar and Syntax Tutoring review by Cheri in Chino Hills, CA
Today we continued to work on Reading Comprehension. We read two short passages (one fiction and one informational), and the student then summarized main points and answered a few questions about each text. While he does well with informational texts, he struggles with fiction in any given form (short story, poetry, et cetera). We will continue to work on his abilities to draw inferences and identify crucial themes or main ideas to address this.
