When it comes to tutoring, my philosophy is that learning should be fun, or at least as painless as possible. My background primarily involves helping liberal arts students experience math and science in a way that makes sense to them. In high school, I struggled with math and science classes and believed that I would never be good at them. After a break of several years, I'm currently in the middle of an undergraduate in Applied Mathematics. I was fortunate enough to have a paradigm shift in the way I perceived myself and the world around me and love getting to share the good news with others: people who prefer reading and making music and art can also do great in their other classes, especially when the math and science is presented the right way.In my free time I like to spin, knit, sew and translate Latin and Old English. I also enjoy comparing the folklore of various cultures, writing music and collecting trivia.

I received my masters of elementary education from the University of Minnesota in May 2021. My bachelor's degree, which I received a year prior, was in elementary education as well. I also have a minor in coaching which I use to coach a high school cheerleading team. Since graduation, I have been working in an elementary school as a premier substitute. I have substitute taught in all grade levels K-5, special education, and specials (gym, art, music). While working towards my master's I worked full time in a 4th grade class. The first half of my year was in an online setting and I feel very comfortable teaching online. I believe strongly in personalized learning and building relationships. Building a mutual respect between teacher and student is one of the first goals I aim to accomplish. Building a relationship is crucial for success because knowing my students means I know what they can do and I am able to use their strengths to help them learn. In my spare time, I enjoy coaching, reading, and crafting. I also love to spend time outside with my friends.

I am Lindsay. I am an avid lover of language, literature, writing, learning, artistic endeavors, athleticism, nutrition, and enhancement of the mind through those pursuits. That being said, I’d like to share my passion and enthusiasm for learning with you.I have been a teacher for 6 years. My teaching experiences are as follows:- middle school children English in the United States as a classroom assistant- middle school children English in Mexico as a lead teacher- American and international university age students Spanish as a part time instructor- high school age students Spanish as a high school teacher- international adults English at a non-profit center in Syracuse, as a student-teacher- kids yoga classes as the lead teacher- adult hatha yoga classes, asana, pranayama, meditation as the lead teacher- high school girls volleyball, basketball and track coachMy idea when I am teaching is that I am a facilitator. That means that you know how to do everything, you just don’t know that you know. My job is to show you that you have everything you need to do it yourself. Therefore, I ask questions to guide you, and in time you will see that you do indeed possess the necessary mental forces to complete the tasks before you of your own accord! When dealing with language, I use the communicative language approach, and focus on instilling a student-centered learning environment. I both create and ask the student to take part in creating course materials and shaping course content to foster interest in both learning and participating in their personal learning progress. I attempt to create an environment where a student feels no fear to ask questions, and is able to verbalize and communicate, and also is able to travel outside the classroom and use what we’ve learned in authentic contexts. I closely monitor student progress, and also am more than open to emailing and meeting at the student’s convenience. As far as my personality goes, I am a very caring, silly, open-minded individual. I genuinely am concerned for the welfare of those around me, which is why I am a yoga instructor. I also love academic pursuits, which is why I hope to be a tutor for who ever needs assistance.

Algebra Tutor • +19 Subjects

I have a BS in Mathematics and a Master's Degree in Biochemistry.I am focused on providing a solid grounding in Algebra, Calculus, and Chemistry because mastery of the basics are so critical for mastery at higher levels.Although Chemistry and Math are my passions, I also love helping students of all ages and in all areas of study. I particularly enjoy working with younger elementary students in subjects such as math and reading. I think that helping students who are stuggling is especially rewarding. Helping students move from a point of frustration to a feeling of understanding is a great feeling. Most of the time, students seek out tutors because they are not "getting it" meaning they are not mastering the material. This is many times due to the way the material is presented. For this reason, I find it is important to be able present material in multiple styles so that my teaching style matches the students learning style. This is something classroom teach just don't have the time to do.I have a love for mathematics because there is a beauty to mathematics that is just not there in other subjects. It always makes sense and if for some reason it doesn't for a student, it is because the student has lost one or more of their tools. I will help you get the tools you need. I also tutor chemistry and I find chemistry students have similar issues. What makes mathematics and chemistry so satisfying to tutor is that when you give the student the tools they need, you get to hear that "Aha" which sometimes just comes as a small gasp.In my free time, I run and cross-train because a strong body makes for a strong, clear mind.

ACT English Tutor • +27 Subjects

I graduated from Brigham Young University in 2009 with a BA in Visual Arts and a BS in Physiology and Developmental Biology with a minor in Chemistry. I tutored a variety of subjects and students during undergrad, most noticeably other undergrads in their advanced writing courses as a University Writing Fellow. I also tutored middle and high school students in their math, science, and English coursework, as well as providing ACT prep for them. Following my undergrad, I was accepted to Teach For America and trained and taught as an early elementary education teacher in all content areas for four years (while also teaching elementary visual arts in the fourth year). During this time, I was the primary first grade Math curriculum planner for my school, as well as a lead planner for first through second grade guided reading. While I can tutor a broad range of subjects and students, my absolute favorite subject to teach is English, including both Reading and Writing, mostly because I find this subject to just be so enjoyable. I believe in a more Socratic and investigative approach to teaching as I think that the deepest learning comes from answering guided questions and coming to one's own conclusions, then matching those conclusions to available standards and literature. I also believe in providing modes of concrete, pictorial, and abstract learning for every standard to truly solidify understanding for all learning styles. In my free time, I love visiting art galleries and I am currently working in a contemporary gallery as well! I also enjoy making art works and sitting back with a delicious new book.

I have over twenty years of teaching and tutoring experience. For 14 years I taught career and technical education courses at the high school level. I have also worked as a home-bound teacher, and substitute teacher in varying subjects.I have high expectations for student achievement and stress that school is a place for learning. I believe that it is important to show the students that what they learn in the classroom transfers into the real world.Students are encouraged to express their knowledge in a variety of ways, which encompass all learning styles. I will use many different techniques to bring instruction to an individualized level. In order for student achievement to occur, teachers must be aware of the different learning styles. I support each student's learning with positive reinforcement and give suggestions for improvement a job well-done.
