Session Summaries by Tutors

Covina, CA tutoring
For this week, we worked on the student's history and math homework. In history, she had to summarize and identify relationships in a current event article relating to nationalism in Africa or South America. We perused several articles and picked one discussing the Boko Haram group in Nigeria. She was able to successfully identify most of the relationships. For math class, she had homework on exponential word problems. I think seeing the big picture is still an issue. I will find more word problems so she can have additional practice.

Today when we met she asked me about the problems she struggles most with, and are most likely to be on the final she will be taking this week. First we worked on secant segments, tangents, arcs, and chords. At the beginning we define each by what they are, and solved a couple exercises together to be able to find the missing length on each specific arc, chord, tangent, or secant segment. After that we moved to factoring binomial and polynomial. I showed one example and asked for two exercises, which she did perfectly. After that we continued with finding the specific angle period for each provided function between 0 and 360. At the end, as a closure, we went over the each lesson briefly and she was feeling pretty confident on each.

We finished covering functions and their graphs today before starting to look at exponentials and logarithms. We looked at how we can manipulate a graph by adding/subtracting and multiplying/dividing a parent function by constants. We also used our understanding of inverse functions to solve equations with variables in the exponents. We also saw how our properties of exponents work the same for numbers raised to a variable and how they lead to similar properties for logarithms. We plan on doing at least one more session on exponentials and logarithms before moving on to trigonometry.

First, I gave the student a refresher on how to add/ subtract fractions. Then we went on to rewriting fractions in reduced form, in mixed form, and in improper form. Finally, I went on to teach him how to divide fractions, which he picked up very well. I think he can use a little more practice in adding/ subtracting fractions.
