Physiology Tutoring review by Thomas in Chino Hills, CA
The student and I reviewed her chemistry writing assignment. The assignment asks the student to touch on several topics, such as the Bohr model of the hydrogen atom; the meaning of shells, subshells, and atomic orbitals; the number of electrons that different shells and subshells can accommodate; and a discussion of the ground state electron configuration of an atom in general and for a specific element. The student will work on this assignment by herself, and we will review her draft at our next appointment.

Physiology Tutoring review by Daniel in Chino Hills, CA
This was focused on the immune system. The student had reviewed some of the material in class briefly, but it was mostly new to him. We covered both innate and adaptive immunity, including the various mechanisms and cell types associated with each. We finished by reviewing immune disorders. In general, the format that seemed to work was that I would explain a subsection to the student, then ask him questions about the key points. Then I would rephrase my explanations as necessary to clarify, before doing the review questions together. It was a lot of material, but I do think the student managed to gain an understanding of pretty much all of it in the short time we reviewed it together.

Physiology Tutoring review by Tam in Chino Hills, CA
The student and I reviewed for her upcoming test about thermodynamics. We discussed the meaning of enthalpy, entropy, and Gibbs free energy. We calculated changes in enthalpy, entropy, and Gibbs free energy using the standard values of the products and reactants of several reactions. We evaluated the sign of entropy during phase changes or chemical reactions, applied the sign of enthalpy and entropy to predict the sign of Gibbs free energy, which determined whether a reaction is spontaneous (or thermodynamically favored). We also discussed whether a dramatic change in temperature would affect the spontaneity of a reaction. The student performed the math very well.

Physiology Tutoring review by Emily in Chino Hills, CA
The student and I reviewed the processes of photosynthesis and respiration by interpreting diagrams showing these cycles, as well as the ideal conditions under which these processes take place. We also discussed analysis tasks from the IB syllabus that she might be asked to do. I left her with a study guide that she could use to review mitosis and meiosis, as well as practice problem videos.

Physiology Tutoring review by Michael in Chino Hills, CA
We continued overall review in preparation for upcoming exams. We reviewed problems from a free-response question handout, covering a wide variety of topics such as electrochemistry, thermochemistry, kinetics, acid/base equilibrium, and atoms/bonding. She has been continuing multiple-choice review outside of sessions, stating that she is becoming more comfortable with these types of questions. Her grasp on overall concepts is strong. She is able to recall appropriate formulas and concepts as necessary when approaching problems, and just needs slight fine-tuning in higher-complexity problems.
