Session Summaries by History Tutors

History Tutoring review by Ryan in New Jersey
In today's lesson we first reviewed the U.S. presidents. The student has almost all of them memorized now. Secondly, we discussed the third chapter of the book "The Lies My Teacher Told Me"; the student seemed to understand the strengths and weaknesses in the author's argument. Thirdly, we reviewed the third chapter of his U.S. history textbook, with me summarizing and asking comprehension questions. I also gave the student a list of terms he has encountered in his reading so far. Lastly, we worked on literature terms.

Today, the student and I worked through a worksheet of events leading up to the Revolution. We discussed the British actions and rationales, as well as the colonists' reactions and rationales to events like the Stamp Act and the Townshend Duties. The student is doing a great job of recognizing the "whys" of history - explaining the events and their significance. We then talked through an essay he has to do in class about his identity and its place in American history. Through a great discussion, the student was able to analyze and think more deeply about his identity and how it has been shaped by history.

Today we covered material from chapters 9 and 10 (reviewing content from last week's classes), specifically 1776-1800. We did so through part lecture, part verbal quizzing. The student needs to work on retention of facts and events- he knows key information, but has to refer to his notes when explaining his responses. I am giving him a primary source document to review and answer for our next session. There were no concerns for this session.

We reviewed for her Unit 2 test coming up tomorrow. Using her study guide given to her by her teacher, we went over each topic point by point to see if she was prepared for the test. I think that she will do just fine with her test tomorrow.

History Tutoring review by Zachary in New Jersey
We began the session by reviewing an essay he wrote last week on the conflict over expansion of the American West from 1840-1860. The essay was strong, but we reviewed how to make a more distinct thesis statement and concluding paragraph. Then we spent about an hour reviewing the chapter about "America Becoming A World Power 1898-1917". Main topics in this chapter were Theodore Roosevelt and his rise and philosophy, the Spanish-American War, and the new American Empire. Then I had him do several multiple choice tests as test practice. As homework I assigned him an episode of Ken Burns' Roosevelt documentary to watch which covers the time period we reviewed today.
