Session Summaries by GMAT Tutors

GMAT Tutoring review by Timothy in Sandy, UT
Today, we finished the gen chem review, hitting ox/redox reactions, entropy, enthalpy, Gibbs free energy, electrolytic cells, voltaic cells, nuclear physics, and half-life questions. We then discussed the plan for the remaining sessions until the test date, and I answered all of the student's questions about the application process. As always, I'm available for any questions that may arise.

GMAT Tutoring review by Davis in Sandy, UT
We did a final review of thermodynamics and phase transitions. We then covered Newtonian physics, including the law of conservation of momentum, force diagrams, and the law of conservation of mechanical energy. The student did extremely well with all of the material. He is really starting to grasp MCAT question styles and key strategies for solving chem/ phys problems. He was particularly adept at the gen chem topics, and could use a little bit more practice with setting up and solving Newtonian physics problems. We will continue to work on this.

GMAT Tutoring review by Travis in Sandy, UT
We discussed CARS for the first time. We looked at diagnostic #6 and started in on passage one, which is a satire by Mark Twain. We discussed the nature of the CARS section and the rules that the MCAT has for the CARS section. We also debated questions that the student missed. We plan on continuing with this diagnostic on Wednesday.

GMAT Tutoring review by Vipinjeet in Sandy, UT
We discussed polarity and intermolecular forces, including a discussion of the effects on boiling point, solvation, and why certain lipophilic substances can lead to toxic accumulations in fat. The student continues to surprise and amaze, actually stating my own concepts better than I had at one point. She does still have a little residual fear regarding being comfortable with her own strength, but I will try to reinforce the very real reasons for her to be confident. I assigned her the chapter on ideal and real gases.

GMAT Tutoring review by Paul in Sandy, UT
We dove right into a review of the student's recent attempt at a practice test. We thoroughly reviewed each topic as they came up; particularly, we spent a good amount of time discussing radioactivity and kinematics. After this, we worked a problem set practicing estimating. This was an area of weakness she identified during her test, so we made sure to get her started on a path toward better arithmetic skills. Finally, we finished the session by working on a difficult CARS passage in philosophy, practicing a new strategy for working passages and answering questions.

GMAT Tutoring review by Sonia in Sandy, UT
We had a very good session today. We reviewed biochemistry concepts such as carbohydrates, pyruvate dehydrogenase, and triglyceride hydrolysis. We reviewed some basic organic chemistry concepts. All of our review incorporated practice passages and questions. Finally, we reviewed a passage on the kidney that the student struggled with, so we mapped out the passage showing how both information from the passage and outside knowledge could be incorporated.
