English Tutoring review by Erin in Sandy, UT
We covered literature comprehension--strictly using the terms tone, personification, point of view, narration, imagery, metaphor, and similes. The student and I have been working through the computer problems, which mimics the actual format of the exam. He has shown a lot of improvement with memory retention and applied learning.

English Tutoring review by Raymond in Sandy, UT
The student did the reading and did an excellent job on the comprehension activities we did together. I had him complete a mini-test (basically just a worksheet without any input from me) and he did extremely well, only missing 2 questions out of 12. When we corrected the worksheet, he understood and corrected his mistakes quickly. This time, I only asked him to do reading for homework and the comprehension activities we will do together.

I was able to locate a copy of the Back to the Future script, so we began to read that on Monday and continued on Wednesday. The student was able to recognize some words immediately, but had trouble with others, specifically words with silent letters. I frequently broke words down by vowel/ consonant sounds to help him sound out the words, and that strategy seemed to work well. I also wrote down words that he didn't know in his notebook for further review. I definitely saw progress in just the two sessions I had with him. Some words that he didn't know initially, he was able to later identify. He loved reading the script, and I think that finding reading material that he is genuinely interested in will be paramount to his continued progress.

We played "Sight Word Jenga" covering 2nd grade sight words. We did the nonsense words phonics test. I read "Gingerbread Man Loose In The School" to the student (his choice). He chose "Green Eggs and Ham" to read to me. He has trouble with fluency when reading out loud. He stumbles over multisyllabic words, double vowel sounds, and "y" sounds. I would like him to try to read at least 10 minutes every day. He is a very engaged and enthusiastic kid; he paid attention and participated actively through the entire session. I took pictures of his sight word lists from school, and we will use these words to work on phonics, fluency, and comprehension for the next session. He enjoyed playing phonics games. We will play new games with his sight words for the next session.

English Tutoring review by Melissa in Sandy, UT
The student did a little better on the essay writing today. I told him that I imagine his mind like a bouncy ball. He needs to take time to slow down his thoughts a little so he can compose himself and come up with what he wants to say next. When he rushes from one idea to the next, his paper becomes disorganized, and the downward spiral continues. I do feel like we are at a good spot to continue on Saturday and be in line to finish in good shape Sunday night. He just has to stay calm and focused.

We worked on spelling, writing, and comprehension. The student needed to study for his spelling test tomorrow, so I had him write out all of his spelling words, enunciate the sound of his spelling words, and then spell them out verbally.
