Session Summaries by Chemistry Tutors

Chemistry Tutoring review by Marcella in Sandy, UT
Today's session continued working with percent composition, empirical formulas and determining "real" formulas from molar mass. We worked through the student's notes and some problems from an online resource.

Chemistry Tutoring review by Julia in Sandy, UT
The student had received her test on balancing equations and redox reactions back from a few weeks ago. Her scores have greatly improved from her past few tests (C+ to B+). She did very well on identifying reactions and the multiple choice questions. She struggled some with time and with balancing redox reactions properly. We discussed strategies for improving. We then discussed the new material she had received: ideal gas law. We mostly went over theoretical principles that we assume in using this law and what they really mean. We then discussed some suggested extra questions from the teacher.

Chemistry Tutoring review by Ryan in Sandy, UT
We went over a lot of stoichiometry and some molarity and dilution. Algebra seems to be the main hurdle in solving most of these problems, and as we work through the problems it will reinforce the student's math abilities. He seems to get molarity and dilution, and a little practice (with solutions to check) will be helpful for him. I look forward to our next session in two weeks!

Chemistry Tutoring review by Bryce in Sandy, UT
We covered both chemistry and precalculus today, making good steps forward in both. I started with precalculus, explaining what a unit circle is and how it relates to the trigonometric functions sin, cos, and tan. I then went on to graph the functions, making sure to explain all relatable information. Next session we will cover the trigonometric identities more in depth and practice with them. After the PreCalc was done, we started studying the concepts of covalent bonding between atoms, nomenclature amongst these compounds, molecular geometry including Lewis dot diagrams and VSEPR models, and polarity. The student grabs on to whatever knowledge she can regarding chemistry, and is very enthusiastic. She takes great notes and is very much interested in the field of study, which is an invigorating change from the norm.

Chemistry Tutoring review by Michael in Sandy, UT
This was a good session. We reviewed the gas laws before an exam. We discussed vapor pressure and air pressure in relation to temperature, pressure, and volume of gases as they compare to ideal conditions to determine the masses of gas exchange products based on eudiometer readings.

Chemistry Tutoring review by Matthew in Sandy, UT
The student and I went through problems from chapters 16, 17, and 18, which were focused on non-acid/ base equilibria, acid/ base equilibria, and buffers, accordingly. She performed very well on chapter 16 and 17 topics, and we discussed strategies for using that to her advantage during the exam. After our session, I emailed her a document which contained ample opportunities for obtaining more practice with chapter 18, which was her only weak point. Overall, she has made excellent progress in her understanding of the topics she is being presented in the course. It is my expectation that her improved understanding will be reflected in her exam score.
