Session Summaries by Geometry Tutors

Geometry Tutoring review by Kasra in Sandy, UT
In today's session with the student, we reviewed Chapter 10, a chapter concerning circles that the student has been doing very well with. He has a test coming up tomorrow on subjects like arc lengths, the formulas for circles, and the Power Theorems. He did not struggle with any particular concept, but rather has been doing very well in this chapter. He is very optimistic about the test tomorrow, and as long as he stays focused, I expect him to do very well. He has done extremely well on his previous Chapter 10 quizzes, and so he should do very well on this test as well. For extra practice, I told the student to practice more with using the Power Theorems, since that was the topic he had the most issues with. I am looking forward to seeing how the student does on this exam.

Geometry Tutoring review by Luke in Sandy, UT
In this session, we went over proofs in geometry that concerned inscribed angles in geometry. This was a challenging problem set because developing a proof requires a lot of problem solving skills and free thinking. I recommended that he continue to work through the problems because it would help him memorize his conjectures for the test.

I covered with the student finding perimeter and area of rhombi and parallelograms; and finding areas of sectors and circles. The student is showing steady progress in grasping and applying geometry concepts.

Today's session with the student went well. He continued working on the basics of trig functions and completed a homework assignment. During this time I created a study sheet for him so that he would have pictures and all the equations for what he was working with. The student had a good attitude towards the material and did fairly well on the assignment.

Geometry Tutoring review by Michael in Sandy, UT
The student and I were working through sections to prepare for his Wednesday test. He wanted to better understand techniques of solving for lengths by "cutting" and extending shapes from internal tangential connections between two circles of different sizes. We experimented to see how extending a rectangle who's long side was parallel to the tangent line connecting both circles would then allow a right triangle to be cut, and often the Pythagorean Theorem could be applied to find a missing side. We worked through a few of these problems, and I even made one up for him when we ran out. He also showed me how he worked a problem with 3 circles tangentially connected, all of various sizes and limited information. By labeling and assigning unknowns in the correct order, while cutting usable shapes from that diagram, we were able to solve for unknowns, resulting in the solutions of all previously undefined lengths and sizes. He told me he feels very confident about Wednesday's test.

Geometry Tutoring review by Amy in Sandy, UT
We worked on right triangles. We started with isosceles, and 30°-60°-90° right triangles. We worked on the associated formulas and how the formulas are derived and used. Next we worked on ways to simplify square roots. We followed this by working on right triangle problems that involved the use of cos, sin, and tan in terms of an angle's adjacent, opposite, and hypotenuse. Last we covered some word problems and discussed the importance of a well drawn picture, and how to set up you problem. We also ran into similar triangles which we discussed as dilations and how ratios fit in. The student has a fine grasp on mathematics. She was great at asking questions when she wasn't sure and showing her skill on similar problems once a concept was understood.
