Essay Editing Tutoring review by Jalyn in Sandy, UT
The student completed homework encompassing reading and reviewing words that end with the letter y. The homework assignment also included a math assignment. She has shown improvement with math. She is still counting on her fingers, but she was much more familiar with the process of how to complete word problems, thus she was more independent. Action steps include practicing word problems and reading for at least 20 minutes per day.

Today, we focused on the student's spelling homework, in which she wrote down this week's words and wrote three sentences using the spelling words of her choice. She completed the sheet and did very well, only mixing up a few letters. She is very independent, often wanting to complete tasks without my help. We did spelling pyramids for the words she was struggling with, which takes the first letter of a word and places focus on each consecutive letter individually. I then quizzed her on each word, asking her to write each word down and say each letter out loud. She responded very well to this exercise.

We worked on talking about favorites, dislikes, and about the hometown. I had the student repeat and circle her troubled words. I left her to practice repeating the dialogues at least 2 times, as well as translating them into Spanish so she would understand more in her language. I also gave her a list of some common words with the translation into Spanish.

In this morning's session, we reviewed key guidelines for narrative writing, and I introduced the student to the three general categories of "illness narratives." These are restitution, chaos, and quest. We then critiqued a total of four published narratives (one general, each of the others a representation of the three types of illness narrative) according to the key guidelines. Next, we discussed tips for beginning a narrative, as the student now has the task of drafting one of her own. This can be a full or partial draft that the student will send to me in advance of the next session so that I can read and review it. Given that drafting a narrative is no easy task, the student has two weeks (at least) to compose it.

Essay Editing Tutoring review by Joyce in Sandy, UT
Today we focused on vocabulary words that the student found difficult during our last six sessions of short and long selections. First we did a crossword puzzle using the 30+ words from her list. She found this difficult, so I helped by telling her which column in the word bank she could find the word she needed. It still took us an hour to finish this puzzle. Then we did a word search puzzle of the same words. As she found a word, I asked her for a definition. She enjoyed this a lot! She will finish it before our next session. Next session we will continue trying to make these vocabulary words part of her everyday vocabulary. Her attitude was awesome, as usual!

Essay Editing Tutoring review by Lucy in Sandy, UT
We covered countable and uncountable nouns and the use of the definite and indefinite article. We reviewed the rules and did practice exercises. We also reviewed the student's homework (reading comprehension, practicing new vocabulary in sentences, and a writing exercise), with a special focus on the use of articles. We also did a pronunciation drill ("th," and "v" versus "w"). I left the student with more article practice exercises and some idioms to learn.
