Session Summaries by French Tutors

French Tutoring review by Kate in Sandy, UT
I was surprised and pleased to be greeted at the door by the student speaking French. We carried out our conversation in French, and though it wasn't perfect, it was understandable and a huge step in the right direction. The hardest part of developing fluency in a language is learning to speak off the top of one's head, so I'm happy to see that he is approaching it with enthusiasm. We then reviewed his homework assignment; he has picked up the futur simple very quickly. We went back through an exercise we previously completed to utilize object pronouns. Our next task was a listening exercise that he did very well on. The subject was checking into a hotel, and after several repetitions, he was able to translate it into English. I left him with the resource from which I found it so he could listen to more activities. We then did a speaking exercise, using the future tense. I've also begun to compile a list of useful phrases for him while he's on his trip.

This session the student and I edited the two answers she prepared for her French final, specifically focusing on grammar. Overall she did very well. The main things she needs to work on are varying vocabulary and using the correct grammatical structures. She will finish the remaining question tonight so that I can give her my notes.

During this session, I presented the le futur, le futur proche, et le conditionnel. We worked on conjugations, and sentences with "si". By the end of the lesson, the student definitely had a great grasp of these three tenses. In our next session, we will continue to build upon this knowledge with sample articles, dialogues, and a verb tense timeline.

French Tutoring review by Jim in Sandy, UT
Today we reviewed verbs: avoir and the -er verbs including aimer. We reviewed how to say how old someone is using avoir, and how to say what you like to do using aimer. Then we learned the verb aller, which is also irregular, and used it to say where you're going as well as to say what you're going to do. Along with that, we learned the days of the week. Then the student took all of that to talk at the paragraph level about what his plans are for this week. I left him with those verbs to review: avoir, aller, and -er verbs, because if he can conjugate those confidently then he will be able to speak more quickly.
