Session Summaries by Reading Tutors

Reading Tutoring review by Madison in Sandy, UT
Today we reread four chapters in a Magic Treehouse book that the student will be tested on tomorrow. We usually read three chapters each session, so after the third chapter he struggled more and seemed less motivated. He seemed more engaged after I read aloud to him, especially using funny voices for the dialogue or when taking turns reading. His reading fluency and speed has improved greatly. He still needs an extra push to focus. During the last part of our session, he made his own flashcards. He responds well to hands-on activities like this. Our next goal will be to make reading seem like less of a chore for him. Reading for him will become easier and more fun as he becomes a stronger and more confident reader.

Reading Tutoring review by Colleen in Sandy, UT
Today, we read through a level M story in the reading program. I chose this level due to the student's performance on the assessments on Tuesday. I've noticed that she tends to feel rushed when reading, which results in her skipping small article and preposition words like "of, the, and, on," etc. When she gets tripped up on a larger word that she has to spell out, she loses the flow of the sentence and begins to rush again. We worked on both of these concepts by underlining in red the small words we tend to miss and circling the punctuation to help us remember when to pause and take a breath between sentences. This seemed to be very helpful. She seems to be improving and has a great attitude.

Since the student is doing so well, I decided to try moving our session up to light speed! We started with a short review, then worked on hearing the differences between the digraphs th-, sh-, ch-. She got the hang of it and did well. Then I introduced two new chunks using an online interactive sort for -og, -ot, -op. She's doing well with this.

My interaction with the student during this session made it clear that he is comfortable working with me and trusts that I will help him. I came armed with specific questions for his parents about his grades, test scores and their specific concerns about his progress. We agreed that I will reach out to his ELA/ Homeroom teacher so that I can learn more about his specific needs and coordinate our efforts. Our initial plan is to create a set of concrete achievable steps we can take to get him to the goal of grade-level performance. We continued our reading comprehension work from the previous session and added a new tool: a "word list" notebook in which he records every unfamiliar word we encounter and the definition for each word, which he writes in his own words and I check for accuracy. Again, I found him to be a bright young man who understands new concepts and can confirm his understanding through comparisons and analogies.

Reading Tutoring review by Banah in Sandy, UT
In this session we focused a lot on writing and how to express thoughts in complete sentences. We played a story-writing game where we competed to see who could write sentences with the most words. The student was very creative with his sentences and spelled out each word on his own. He worked on his homework which was to write three sentences describing his favorite book and why it was his favorite. Then we did spelling exercises through our hangman game and read book #9 in his sight word series. He finished his sight word series and is reading for a new set of books to begin.

Reading Tutoring review by Kathryn in Sandy, UT
Tonight, Student 1 read a lengthy article to me about radiation and answered questions verbally and in writing. We also read an article about Winston Churchill and one about Walt Disney's contribution to the war effort in WWII. We also looked at vocabulary, used the dictionary, and made vocabulary cards for some of the words. Student 2 read a long article to me. He answered questions both verbally and in writing. He then read to me about the worldwide loss of bee colonies, which we discussed in detail and wrote answers to essay questions. We used the dictionary, made vocabulary cards, and made-up sentences for new words.
