Biology Tutoring review by Claire in Sandy, UT
The student and I spent our first session discussing genetics and she completed a problem set that she had for homework in the process. A number of the topics and definitions that we discussed were new to her because she missed classes, but that didn't deter her from doing the work thoroughly and enthusiastically. She was determined to understand each topic completely and was visibly excited each time she met her goal. This excitement for learning was infectious -- I really had a good time working with her!

Today the student and I continued to go over plant biology topics. Specifically we covered the four main plant groups, plant characteristics, and plant reproduction. She is learning the material well, but based on her last quiz and previous quizzes, I suspect that her test-taking skills could improve. She often makes simple mistakes despite knowing the subject matter. Therefore in subsequent sessions we will work on simulating test questions and conditions. Otherwise she is progressing quite well.

The student and I concluded our coverage of chapter 12 based on a list of covered topics prepared by his teacher. This is the first chapter where most of the sections are not covered, which has made this chapter a bit more of a challenge. We looked at different techniques and skills used in biotech and forensics for the purposes of gene detection, gene insertion, CSI, and other possible uses. Many of these techniques are based on what is known about how cells copy genes, copy DNA and how viruses and bacteria can be used as vectors to do the hard work for you. Next session we will start review for his next quiz/ test.

We spent our session preparing for the student's upcoming exam. We focused on topics that she felt she had difficulty with which were the cell cycle, functions and types of organelles, cell cycle checkpoints and cytokinesis/ karyokinesis. I quizzed her on these concepts and by the end of our session she seemed to have a much better understanding of what we covered. I told her the areas she needs to continue studying for the exam, and gave her some exam tips.

In this session, we worked to study for the student's upcoming genetics quiz on Monday and made sure that she knew and understood the concepts for her latest homework assignment. This chapter's content comes easily to her and she has a very good understanding of the concepts. We filled out most of the study guide, and I asked her to study for the quiz before Monday and finish the rest of her homework. Next session, we will study for her test on Wednesday.
