The student and I did some more review for his upcoming test. The test will be in two parts, and he was totally prepared for the first one, covering types of symmetry, internal angles of regular n-gons, and complementary/supplementary angles. So, most of the session was spent on the topics of the second part of the test: area/perimeter and surface area/volume. Since our session on Saturday where we covered much of the same material, I noticed quite an improvement. He said he did some more studying in the one-day interim, and it showed. Saturday, we were reviewing cylinders, but during this session, the numbers all came out correctly. His work was much more clear, and I noticed him making an effort at it. I tried to emphasize the basic concepts of what he was being asked to find, rather than focus on rote memorization of formulas, so that if he forgets the formulas he can still solve the problem. He did seem to genuinely get what he was doing, and says he feels confident for his test, which is great.

Tutoring review by Jerilynn in Burlingame, CA
We reviewed fluid force, pumping, area between curves, volumes of revolution, and volumes by cross-section. We looked at how to describe various shapes in both two- and three-dimensions and calculating the area or volume using an integral. The student is doing well with finding the area between two curves and using that to find the fluid force on that area as a function of depth. She is also doing well using similar techniques to find the amount of work needed to pump liquid out of various volume shapes. She was unsure of how to generalize the method of finding volumes from setting up a pumping problem, so we looked at ways to describe the volume. Once we were able to define the initial area that describes the basis for the volume either by rotating that area or using it to define a specific part of a cross-section, the student was able to set up the integrals for calculating the volume. She is planning on going through the homework problems for area and volume from her textbook before our next session so we can go over it and look at any problems that she has trouble setting up.

Tutoring review by Jessica in Burlingame, CA
We reviewed the material for her current chapter in Spanish class. We covered DOP's and IOP's. We defined and discussed the difference between direct object and indirect object. We identified object pronouns and personal pronouns. We discussed pronoun placement within sentence structure and we practiced from a supplemental Spanish book of mine with sentences provided in Spanish replacing the direct object noun with the direct object pronoun. We played an online game with direct object and indirect object pronouns. We also reviewed sentences where double object pronouns were replacing both indirect and direct objects. The student did a phenomenal job with DOP's and IOP's! So we moved on to subjective with uncertainty and subjective with emotions and briefly touched on these contexts as she is already familiar with the subjunctive tense and subjunctive conjugation. To end our lesson we reviewed her new vocabulary, first reading all terms and words out loud in Spanish and then in English. We then used the vocabulary during Spanish conversation, taking turns asking each other questions and responding in Spanish. This was one of our best sessions yet! Great job!
