Test Prep Tutoring review by Shannon in San Francisco-Bay Area, CA
The student and I focused on algebra and linear functions, which she said were her weakness the last time. She does seem to struggle with sometimes knowing where to start, so we practiced thinking through problems logically, letting one piece of information guide us to the next and then the next. When she sees it as a linear, logical process rather than an unsolvable puzzle, she does much better.

We continued with math - the student's doing incredibly well, working through problems in the 40s and 50s with little to no prompting. Some of the material bled into schoolwork, so we started in on her math review packet, talking imaginary numbers, exponent properties, quadratics, and some graphing.

We reviewed practice tests 5 and 6. The student scored a 720 and 730 on the tests, respectively, so I am optimistic about his chances of getting a high score this Saturday. For the first time, the student seemed engaged when solving probability questions and even asked for enrichment problems from other sources so he could further challenge himself. He has most geometry and algebra formulas memorized at this point and is extremely proficient at using his calculator. I urged him to use it as much as possible to save time and because it could easily analyze functions that would take inordinate amounts of time to solve by hand.

Last meeting before Math SAT IIc on Tues, 5/28. The student got around a 640 on the test, this bodes well for getting over a 700 on the upcoming exam. Student was not familiar with law of sines or cosines, recommended reviewing trig. concepts.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Patricia in San Francisco-Bay Area, CA
For session 5/30 Reviewed the student's homework essay per rubric. The essay was a large improvement over her last effort. Read and critiqued sample, graded SAT essays in the prep guide. Reviewed grammatical points for possessives used with gerunds and the use of "neither" and "either" combinations based on incorrect items the student had in our last session. Discussed tactics for writing to the SAT prompts given the time limits: allocating the times to components of the writing process (planning/rough outlining, thesis, drafting intro and body, review, drafting conclusion, final review, making corrections/insertions, proofreading with a concentration on clarity, conciseness, and consistency (grammatical and composition logic). As before, the student was focused and hardworking. We scheduled our next session for 6/11.

"The Elements of Style" put to good use. Session focus was on essay development and execution in managed time frame. The student's essay writing is top notch. His ability to extrapolate with immediacy is impressive.
