How can a tutor help your child master the SSAT?

The SSAT, or the Secondary School Admissions Test, is an exam that offers a standardized measurement for private schools to determine the academic ability an applicant may have. There are three levels of the test, which are elementary, middle, and upper. Students in third through eleventh grade are eligible to take the exam. Each version of the test has a different number of questions and time allotted for completion of the test. Is your child preparing to take the SSAT? Varsity Tutors can help you connect your child with a tutor to help them prepare. SSAT tutors in San Francisco, California, can guide your student through the practice modules and material that will be covered on the exam.

There are four sections on the exam: quantitative, reading comprehension, verbal reasoning, and an essay. If your child has a hard time grasping any of these subjects, a private SSAT tutor can cater their lessons to how they learn the most effectively. Your student's tutor can observe how they take in information and then design their sessions to correspond with your child's unique learning style. If your student learns best with hands-on activities, their tutor can provide activities that require hands-on participation. Their tutor can also present information to them in a way that they may find engaging to help with their retention and comprehension. San Francisco SSAT tutors can help your child prepare for the material on the exam by teaching to their strengths.

SSAT Tutoring review by Rebecca in San Francisco-Bay Area, CA
The student had a great session. Concepts covered: +/- fractions and decimals, improper/mixed numbers, converting between frac/percents/dec, percentages of a whole by multiplying, taxes etc. The student then did a portion of a SSAT math practice and a portion of a vocab SSAT practice. Then we corrected still figuring out guessing vs. confidently knowing answers.

We started the session by completing Part A of the reading comprehension section. The student then attempted Section 1 of Practice Test 1. After completion we reviewed her answers. He did well. She did best on the analogies section. She was able to explain her reasoning behind her answers. Between this week and next, she should try to complete Part B of reading comprehension and Section 1 of Practice Test 2. She remains very motivated and it working very hard!

Today the student and I did a complete mock SAT exam including timed sections. We will need to spend some of our time on the verbal section. She did very well on math and reading. Next week we will work on skills to help identify synonyms including, dissecting prefixes/suffixes and determining root words of unknown words.

SSAT Tutoring review by Tara in San Francisco-Bay Area, CA
The student and I continued to refresh his math skills. We reviewed decimals and percents in context to the type of questions that would be asked on the test. Once it was reinforced through a few problems, he was back on track. We also reviewed some verbal analogies, reiterating the test taking strategies we have previously discussed. Within this review, we came across some of the vocabulary we have looked at previously, and I was pleased with his retention rate. I assigned him another page of vocabulary to put on note cards for our next session. We will also go over some basic algebra concepts that are addressed on the middle level SAT.

SSAT Tutoring review by Ralston in San Francisco-Bay Area, CA
Started by reviewing basic information about the test - how it's organized, the structure, scoring, etc. Then studied the basic relationships found within analogies, brainstorming examples of those types of relationships, and doing practice with analogies. Spent some time going over Latin/Greek roots and the remainder of the session going over some additional English vocabulary. The student is focusing well and is picking up the information quickly. It just needs to be explained to him clearly.

SSAT Tutoring review by Hillary in San Francisco-Bay Area, CA
Today was an introductory day, so I worked with the students together. We spoke about the general format of the test and some test-taking tips for a while, as well as what it would be best to spend our time covering. I began by illustrating the different types of reading passages they can expect, as well as the types of questions they can expect from each. We went through about a half-dozen passages together and I annotated each of them, showing the students how to anticipate the questions they may be asked. We also worked through a little bit of vocabulary for about 45 minutes, mostly analogies.
