Session Summaries by Latin Tutors

Latin Tutoring review by Andrew in San Francisco-Bay Area, CA
This session, we continued working on the material we'd covered last time, using prepositions and pronouns, and using the present tense as well as the future and imperfect. This time, we added in the use of pronouns, and I had the student translating and creating sentences using adjectives together with nouns. In covering prepositions, we added in the preposition ab, which, unlike all the others they've learned, takes the ablative case instead of the accusative, offering us the first time to deal with the ablative case. The student struggled a bit with pairing adjectives and nouns in the right gender and number, but when prompted they were able to correct their mistakes.

Latin Tutoring review by Hannah in San Francisco-Bay Area, CA
To begin our session, the student and I reviewed "volo" and I introduced two more irregular Latin verbs, "nolo" and "malo". I asked the student to copy the present, future, imperfect, and perfect tense conjugation charts and translate the first person singular verb form for each tense. He was able to conjugate malo in imperfect tense without referencing my chart. He is beginning to learn his verb endings! I introduced the principle parts and present tense chart for the irregular Latin verb, "fero". The student also copied the present tense conjugation chart for "fero". Next I introduced comparison of adjectives, explaining the distinction between positive, comparative, and superlative degree adjectives. I asked the student to provide English examples of comparative and superlative adjectives and then we completed Exercise 24.1 in his textbook. I asked him to memorize the present, future, imperfect, and perfect tense conjugation charts for "volo" before our next session.

Latin Tutoring review by Scott in San Francisco-Bay Area, CA
During this session, the student and I discussed the 5 different verbal conjugations. As we covered each conjugation in depth, I wrote out each paradigm and had her practice writing each conjugation. I emphasized the importance of repetition when learning a language. Writing out each conjugation will help her remember each one, as well as recognize the difference between each form. The conjugation practice helped her better understand the nuances of Latin. For the next session, she and I will discuss noun declensions. I want her to really learn and understand Latin.
