How can a tutor help you master the SAT?

The SAT is a common standardized test colleges use to determine a student's aptitude for admission to their school. The exam consists of two sections: evidence-based reading and writing and math, along with an optional essay. The exam lasts for three hours, with an additional 50 minutes for the essay. This can be a very intense test, and many students find it stressful to prepare for the exam on their own. If you are feeling overwhelmed by the SAT, working with a tutor may be a great solution. Varsity Tutors' educational directors can help you find a San Francisco, California, SAT tutor who can complete SAT test prep with you.

If you are hoping to score well on the SAT, you'll have to have a wide breadth of knowledge in many different subjects. The SAT tests for critical reading and mathematics skills, and many students may excel at one and struggle in another. If you are weak in one area, it can bring down your score on the overall test, even if you're particularly strong on the other. When you work with a personal tutor, you can focus on the area where are weakest and prepare for the exam in a way that is effective for you. Your tutor can pinpoint the areas that are the most difficult for you and drill these areas. They can do more than just give you worksheets, though. They can work with you to make sure you understand the concepts behind the problems you struggle with so that future questions can be easier for you. While the goal is test prep, SAT tutoring in San Francisco may reteach you concepts you've always struggled with.

SAT Tutoring review by Ginger in San Francisco-Bay Area, CA
The student and I first discussed different ways to structure her essay: with two examples and a counter argument or three strong examples. We practiced three essay prompts together, creating an outline made of thesis, examples, counter argument if possible, and conclusion. After that, we went through the different math topics such as arithmetic, algebra, and geometry, and we reviewed any topics as necessary. We then went through 18 multiple choice math problems.

SAT Tutoring review by Travis in San Francisco-Bay Area, CA
The student and I went over several practice tests for the math section. The problems that we focused on primarily were those with the grid in answers, because those tend to be harder than most of the multiple choice. We reviewed how to apply the properties of exponents when solving equations. One important strategy that we talked about was looking for patterns, especially in problems involving sequences and series and factoring, because this will make computations much simpler and faster, and free up time that can be used to check problems. On the practice tests we have taken so far, the student has consistently been scoring in the 650-680 region, which is almost a 100 point improvement over the math score she received when the took the SAT several months ago.

SAT Tutoring review by Alonso in San Francisco-Bay Area, CA
This was the last session since she has her test on Saturday. We went over the material she completed this week which was a few math and critical reading sections. We talked about the rules of exponents and some vocab words and completed the problems she couldn't answer. As usual the emphasis was on answering the easy questions correctly and quickly instead of getting the last few.
