Phonics Tutoring review by Kia in San Francisco-Bay Area, CA
The student had to write a poem for class about a challenge he overcame. We spent the majority of the time discussing possible ideas for him to write about. He finally picked an event to talk about and he applied things from the descriptive language exercise the day before to his poem.

During this session, I oversaw the student as she studied for a grammar test on gerunds, participles, and infinitives. I quizzed her on the definition and function of each grammatical term. All of which, she answered correctly. The student then did a few pages of grammar exercises. I had more of a hands off approach during this session because she properly identified gerunds, participles, and infinitives in all of the exercises she completed. At some points, she would second guess herself, but then I challenged her to work through her own thought process to reach the correct answer. As I've said previously, the student is a strong English student, and at this stage in her development as a student of literature, I am going to challenge her more and more to work independently in order to trust her mind's analytical abilities.

Phonics Tutoring review by Gita in San Francisco-Bay Area, CA
I introduced pronouns this week; we started with personal pronouns, both subject and object. Most of the session was devoted to explaining the first, second and third person, using the common personal subject pronouns as examples in simple sentences. I briefly explained the difference between grammatical subject and object, but kept the focus on the pronouns. I gave them simple sentences and had them substitute pronouns for nouns. For homework, I gave them a worksheet that has them identify the pronoun in sample sentences and determine whether it is a subject or object pronoun (usually by locating it on the charts we made).

Phonics Tutoring review by John in San Francisco-Bay Area, CA
There was nothing immediately due in World History but we went over the History of Yugoslavia and the U.S. involvement there and the hesitancy of intervening in Rwanda. Talked about conditions in Sarajevo and Kosovo for children of the war. Then we spent most of the time correcting a difficult vocabulary quiz, rewriting the answers and giving the reasons for our new answers.

Phonics Tutoring review by Stephanie in San Francisco-Bay Area, CA
Today the student and I focused on studying for an English vocabulary test she has tomorrow. We went through each definition and I quizzed her until she knew all the words. Then, she wrote sentences with the few words she was still struggling with. After this, I gave her a worksheet of math problems so she could work on improving her arithmetic skills.
