How can a tutor help you master the PSAT?

Every fall brings a new school year and an opportunity for your student to take the PSAT. If your student is in 8th or 9th grade, this opportunity presents itself in the spring as well, in the form of the PSAT 8 or PSAT 9. For 10th and 11th graders, the PSAT NMSQT doubles as a practice exam for the SAT and a National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT). The PSAT provides the opportunity for students to qualify for a college scholarship should they perform well on the exam. Due to this added incentive, it is of the utmost importance that your child be as prepared as possible for this exam. This may mean calling in the help of a private tutor. Varsity Tutors can assist you in your search for an experienced and dedicated PSAT tutor in San Francisco, California. Your child's tutor can be flexible to your schedule, working with your student online or in person at a place and time determined by you.

San Francisco PSAT tutors provide benefits that cannot be found in study groups, test prep courses, or test prep books. A private tutor can work with your child one-on-one to help them determine where they need to spend the majority of their study time. Once that has been determined, your child and their tutor can then work together to design a custom-made study plan, tailored just for your student's studying needs. They can choose to go over each section of the exam (evidence-based reading, writing, and math) or just one or two of the sections. Their tutor can also go over practice exams with your student to help clarify any answers they got incorrect. This can be particularly helpful for the writing section. While practice exams and books may have an answer key, an in-depth explanation of the concepts missed can help. Likewise, their tutor can provide valuable essay-writing methods and test-taking techniques.

We covered the student's mistakes from a PSAT practice test. She wrote an essay, which we reviewed together. Next week, we will begin working in the prep SAT book.

PSAT Tutoring review by Laurel in San Francisco-Bay Area, CA
We worked through portions of a math and a writing section during the session. We discussed what "percent" and "of" mean mathematically (divide by 100, and multiply, respectively). We also spent time working on math problems involving sequences/patterns, and chart interpretation problems. From his performance on the writing section, it's clear that we need to review certain areas of grammar. These include: subject-verb agreement (which we discussed in this session), conjunctions & subordinate clauses, verb tense agreement, and misplaced modifiers. I will bring some of my grammar write-ups to the next session, where we will go into grammar rules in more detail.

PSAT Tutoring review by Cheryl in San Francisco-Bay Area, CA
The student's math and written sections were again in the "superior" range. His reading fell a bit, into the "high average." He is still consistently missing at least a couple sentence completions and several passage questions. The main problem, even with the questions missed in the passages, seems to be vocabulary. So before we finished going over the types of math on the test we backed up to the vocabulary section. We went through the 300 most popular vocabulary words, discussing any that he did not already know. His homework this week, instead of a practice test, is the vocabulary section in the study guide -- 100 sentence completions. He has specific instructions to do the ones he can without help, and to mark the ones he has to skip. Then he is to go back and look up the words in the ones he skipped and try to figure out the correct answers. I am hoping to build his vocabulary and add as many of the common words as possible. We did finish the math information, too.

PSAT Tutoring review by Alex in San Francisco-Bay Area, CA
Today we drilled the writing section, discussing misplaced modifiers, subject verb number agreement, idioms, and faulty comparisons. We also drilled the math section, discussing the strategy of plugging in values and using hidden plug-ins. We used these strategies in a variety of problems, including problems with exponents, percentages, and geometric figures. We also spent some time reviewing vocabulary and taking a vocabulary quiz of commonly tested words. The student seems to be making progress in his PSAT preparation. I left him with one section each of writing, critical reading, and math as well as a vocabulary list for homework.

PSAT Tutoring review by Tara in San Francisco-Bay Area, CA
Today I enjoyed meeting the student for the first time. We established tutoring goals for our upcoming sessions based on her practice test scores and specific areas of need. She also completed the reading comprehension portion of a diagnostic test. We scored her results, went over answers, and discussed comprehension strategies. We focused on breaking down large texts into easily digestible portions. For homework she will use the new strategies to complete the second reading comprehension portion of the test.

PSAT Tutoring review by Andrew in San Francisco-Bay Area, CA
Went over PSAT and SAT practice test questions, gave him the tests I created through the learning tools. He demonstrated good knowledge of what we covered today and realized his mistakes with the practice tests. Was able to use the explanations to help guide him with how to answer the questions.
