Phonics Tutoring review by Kian in Lockport, IL
The student and I spent a session reading through Romeo and Juliet. I pulled up a version with the original text and annotated paraphrasing side by side. We read through Act 2 and a bit of Act 3. She said she had previously been struggling to understand some bits of dialogue, but going over it with me helped her make sense of everything.

Phonics Tutoring review by Mark in Lockport, IL
The student started today's tutoring session with a journal entry. After he responded to the journal question, he read his answer to me aloud. We then moved on to vocabulary development. After we reviewed the new vocabulary words -- and their definitions -- I gave him a twenty-question quiz (to check for understanding). We then moved on to grammar study. Today, he completed an idioms worksheet. We reviewed the eight idioms -- and their meanings. Some of the idioms on this worksheet included: 1) Break a leg (wishing someone good luck); 2) It's raining cats and dogs (it's raining very hard); and 3) Don't be a back seat driver (telling the driver how to drive and what to do). He was familiar with the meanings of most of the idioms on this specific worksheet. He finished his tutoring lesson today with a free write (writing on a topic of his choice). His writing topic: the past. After he completed his free write, he read it to me aloud. He has an aptitude for writing. He is very thoughtful with his choice of words. He is a very bright student who is motivated to learn.

Phonics Tutoring review by William in Lockport, IL
For our first session, I asked the student a lot of questions about his class, teacher, assignments, etc. to formulate an assessment as to what he needed to work on. We both agree that grammar and writing will be the main areas of focus. We began working on noun exercises and he understood the use of nouns well. Following that I introduced him to the four basic types of sentences and then had him a write a short paragraph incorporating all four types. For homework, he is going to rewrite the paragraph using all four types, but making the paragraph longer than the first draft.

The student read 6 books today. She is reading Level D and E books. I found when she gets stuck on a word, she says another word that starts with the same first letter. We are working on looking at the whole word and all of its sounds. She also practiced writing sentences with short u and e words.

The student read a nonfiction story on level N. He did very well answering short answer response questions and relating a personal experience to the article. In math, we worked on basic multiplication skills. I shared many strategies with him so that he depends less on using his fingers. His HW is multiplication of 6s, 7s, 8s, and 9s.
