Session Summaries by Phonics Tutors

Phonics Tutoring review by Michael in Shorewood, IL
The teacher had found a good study guide for "Where the Red Fern Grows" that is well targeted for the student's grade level. In it is a good multiple choice test covered events and details through the whole novel. He had made copies of the test for the student to take. I started him on the test, giving him 20 minutes on a countdown timer. However, he only needed about 7 minutes to finish. He only missed 6 out of 20 questions, which was encouraging to me. I praised his quickness and accuracy. I made plans for a session this weekend.

Today we covered chapter 9 in Bridge to Terabithia. The student's summary that she had written on chapter 9 was good, but was lacking some detail. I will do more exercises with her that teach her how to identify important events. I assigned her chapter 10 and 11 to read and write summaries on for next week.

Phonics Tutoring review by Ben in Shorewood, IL
The student needed some help so I quizzed him on the U.S. constitution - this is a subject he is predisposed toward and so he has committed many of the main figures and issues to memory, and is able to explain their significance. He has a good grasp of the historical narrative, in which the Constitutional Convention of 1787 was held in Philadelphia to create a new basis of government improving on the Articles of Confederation; and furthermore, the compromises settled upon to satisfy supporters of both the Virginia Plan (centralized government with representation based on population) and the New Jersey Plan (equal representation for each state). We also discussed the three branches of government (judicial, executive, legislative) and the "checks and balances" put in place to ensure an equal distribution of power among these branches.
