How can a tutor help your child master the HSPT?

If your goal is to have your child attend a private school, then you may need to have them start preparing to take the High School Placement Test (HSPT). This exam is only given twice a year (once in the fall and once in the spring) and is required for admission to many private schools. A private tutor may be an option to consider to help your student prepare for exam day. Varsity Tutors can help you find an HSPT tutor in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, who can help your child prepare for exam day. Your student's tutor may also help them in person at a time and place that is convenient for you, or face-to-face online.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, HSPT tutors can walk your student through each section of the exam (language, math, quantitative skills, reading, verbal skills, and any optional sections). By going over the entire exam with your student, their tutor can determine where the problem areas are that they need to focus on. This also allows your student to see the structure of the exam and understand the layout they can expect on test day. Test anxiety is often a big component to consider for large exams. Seeing what the exam will look like ahead of the big day may help ease the fear of the unknown and the resulting anxiety. The timing factor of the exam also contributes to this, and to dispel this, their tutor can time each section as your student takes a practice exam. This can allow them to experience a mock test day with only 25 minutes to complete the language section, 30 minutes to finish quantitative skills, 45 minutes to complete math, 25 minutes to complete reading, and 16 minutes to finish verbal skills.

HSPT Tutoring review by Carolyn in Philadelphia, PA
We practiced combining like terms over an equals sign, and talked about strategies for solving difficult long division problems. Then we worked through the problem solving section, emphasizing that she knew how to do almost all the problems. She was also very well prepared with her vocabulary this week.

At this point, we are simply reviewing all of the concepts we have learned, both math and verbal. The student is very close to being ready! Tomorrow will be his last day before the test. We will do a brief review of every topic discussed and go over any outlying questions.

HSPT Tutoring review by Kylie in Philadelphia, PA
I began the session by giving the student a timed reading section. She finished the passages in about half the allotted time, and answered every question correctly. We spent the rest of the lesson reviewing complicated word problems, such as distance, ratios, and averages. I talked to the student about breaking these questions into small pieces that she can solve one step at a time, so that she doesn't get overwhelmed by all of the irrelevant information.

HSPT Tutoring review by Katherine in Philadelphia, PA
We covered how to solve word problems involving distance, rate, and time, as well as worked word problems. We went through a practice test for Math, methodically analyzing each problem. She has a very logical mind, so she did well. We did a timed verbal section of a practice test, which the student scored well on. She is very good at analogies and verbal logic..

HSPT Tutoring review by Darren in Philadelphia, PA
The student and I had another productive session today, working on vocabulary questions, reading comprehension, and grammar. For the vocabulary questions we spent a bit of time going over roots and cognate words. His understanding of the reading comprehension answers is pretty strong. We spent the last 40 minutes or so working on grammar-related questions and made a lot of progress there. We discussed the perfect, past perfect, and future perfect tenses, pronoun forms, subject/object agreement, apostrophe usage, and some other grammatical issues. We will continue with grammar stuff in our session tomorrow afternoon.
