Session Summaries by French Tutors

French Tutoring review by Avery in West Valley City, UT
In this session, the student and I reviewed the replacement of double object pronouns and did a few exercises in his book. In class, he has previously worked with replacing indirect object pronouns as well as direct object pronouns. Because they have not yet gotten to the chapter dealing with double replacement, learning this was a head's up for what will be taught in future classes. Additionally, we reviewed a few irregular preterite verbs, which he seems to have completely down pat. Due to class scheduling, he will be changing teachers beginning on Monday. The classwork and assignments that had previously been assigned to him may be changing. As a result, we used the beginning of this session as a review. In his former class, there was a quiz that was scheduled for tomorrow. Although he was unsure whether or not he would still have to take the quiz, we prepared as if he would, just in case. The majority of the quiz dealt with vocabulary, and he wrote down all of the ones that he didn't remember so as to highlight them for studying. Once he meets his teacher tomorrow and is updated on the class and the assignments, he will have more clarity, which will guide the topics that we will cover in future sessions.

French Tutoring review by Katherine in West Valley City, UT
Today we continued our work with verb conjugations in the present and introduced -ar verb conjugations in the preterite tense. While the student is still struggling with some of the vocabulary knowledge expected, he seems to be picking up on verb conjugation patterns and becoming increasingly more comfortable and confident. I was impressed with how he caught on to preterite verb conjugations.

We reviewed the student's homework, which was a cultural reading mainly in English. We talked about it in Spanish. We also read a Dr. Seuss book, focusing on pronunciation, building vocabulary, and oral language.

French Tutoring review by Reyna in West Valley City, UT
The student and I discussed his Spanish project. I helped him create a script in which he needed to include at least 10 Spanish vocabulary words. We then moved on to working on accent rules. He is doing a lot better at accents and at memorizing his vocabulary words.

French Tutoring review by Mariaa in West Valley City, UT
Today we covered the preterite tense and some review of the present tense because the student has a test on those concepts. She showed me what they worked on, and then we did some online review. I then quizzed her on -car/-gar/-zar verbs, irregular verbs, and stem changing verbs. She felt she did not know stem change verbs so the main focus of the quiz was on those, but she did well. It was just a matter of remembering. I had a verb workbook that we also used to practice sentences and other verbs of similar form that she did not learn in class to help. She does very well on her in-class quizzes. Next session we will see how she did on the test and go over anything else she learns this coming week.

French Tutoring review by Kristen in West Valley City, UT
First, the student did the assigned homework, which was to create 5 sentences about what her family members look like (physical characteristics). We reviewed the difference between "ser" and "estar" and did several practice sessions to prepare for the upcoming quiz. We also worked on some new vocabulary (colors, days of the week, months of the year, how to write the date, body parts, and possessive words). The student was mainly struggling with remembering the conjugate forms of the verbs we were practicing, so we made a chart to show the relationships between the conjugations of "ser" and "estar" to show how the endings are very similar. This seemed to help her and make everything click. I recommended that she start listening to Spanish radio for a little bit every day so she can become more familiar with how the language sounds without having to do much extra work.
