I was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, lived among the french people for two years, and am currently an undergraduate student at BYU completing a B.S. in Biophysics with a minor in French. I plan on getting a PhD in Physics and pursue a career as a college professor. I love learning new subjects, hiking in the mountains, swimming, water polo, music, and traveling.

My experience in teaching and mentoring has taken many different forms over the years. I have taught Advanced Wilderness Medicine techniques to physicians in the Netherlands, educated Kenyan villagers about proper self-care and hygiene, taught water polo as head coach of the local High School girls water polo team, and volunteered as a teacher's aid in local elementary schools. I enjoy working with all age groups and enjoy helping students understand and develop their unique learning styles. I have been working one-on-one with high school and college students for over 5 years, focusing on physics, french, chemistry, biology, mathematics, and ACT preparation.

I have had great success over the years with my students. One student improved his ACT score by 4 points in just three months of weekly tutoring sessions. Most all of my students have seen their class and test scores improve by one or two letter grades. Along with improving grades, it is important to me that students discover their personal learning style and gain confidence in the learning process.

My teaching style is both personal and goal-oriented. In the first time meeting a student I like to briefly introduce myself. I like to hear a little about the student as well. I then take time to hear the student's attitude towards their class, their own perceived strengths and weaknesses with that subject, and what they hope to achieve by working with me. The student and I then develop a plan on how to best achieve their academic goals. I am passionate about this process. I view my job from as both effectively teaching the subject matter and consistently following-up on the student's progress toward their goals.

I look forward to working with you.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

I look to teach students to enjoy the pursuit of learning and excellence. Learning and understanding the world around you should be fun and exciting. So I try to relate the subject matter to the interests and hobbies of my students. My teaching style is one that empowers students. My goal is that they learn correct principles, understand how to use them, and apply them with increasing confidence. I want them to be able to become autonomous in evaluating and improving their academic performance.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In the first time meeting a student I like to briefly introduce myself. I like to hear a little about the student as well. I then take time to hear the student's attitude towards their class, their own perceived strengths and weaknesses with that subject, and what they hope to achieve by working with me. The student and I then develop a plan on how to best achieve their academic goals. We would then proceed to talk about the subject matter that they are working on.
