Session Summaries by French Tutors

French Tutoring review by Audrey in South Jordan, UT
In this session with the student, we reviewed the passe compose, because she will study it in her next French class. She took her final test yesterday and her teacher said that she will have a 99 average. It is very satisfying. We also did a reading comprehension exercise today with a newspaper article and questions about it. She did a pretty good job, as the article was really challenging. I will send her exercises to keep her practicing and be prepared for a next French class.

French Tutoring review by Hallie in South Jordan, UT
The student has a listening and speaking test on Monday, but she feels pretty comfortable about the speaking part, so we focused on listening. She has a review sheet that we went through, covering pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary. We then did two practice listening "tests," where I read sentences from the review sheet and asked her yes/no questions about them. There is some vocabulary that she is familiar with but doesn't recognize without seeing it written. I recommended that she use an online dictionary to study these, so she can listen to the pronunciation. These issues aside, she understands most sentences and is often able to figure them out even when some words or expressions are unfamiliar. I'm sure she'll do just fine on her test!

French Tutoring review by Matthias in South Jordan, UT
The student has a test coming up on the painters Renoir and Bonnard. We discussed the differences between the two artists in style, in background, and in philosophy. In addition, we reviewed some of the same vocabulary that we've been drilling for the past few weeks. At this point, he has almost all of them down. One of the only issues is "des fournitures scolaires," which he almost invariably translates as "school supply store." I think I diagnosed the issue as stemming from the fact that "fournitures scolaires" kind of sounds like the English phrase "furniture store." I suggested that he translate "des fournitures scolaires" as "SOME school supplies," in order for the number of words in either phrase to equal out. We went over some new phrasings and some grammar as well.

French Tutoring review by Lin in South Jordan, UT
The student has an oral presentation this week, so she and I spent some time reviewing vocabulary necessary for the project. Since her French class is at the end of the chapter, which usually means a test is near, we reviewed all vocabulary and grammar concepts related to the chapter. She has a firm grasp on all material from this chapter, so we then began discussing vocabulary from the next chapter (food), as well as focusing on cultural topics related to food, meals, and grocery shopping in France. Since numbers will be used frequently (prices of food, for example), we reviewed numbers in French from 0-100. We did a couple of role-playing activities, worked through a reading comprehension exercise, discussed food preferences, and worked through two more exercises to reinforce new vocabulary. She showed me a recent French homework exercise on which she received a perfect score!

French Tutoring review by Alex in South Jordan, UT
This lesson, the student and I worked on the vocabulary for his test on Wednesday, and we made decent progress. If he can get a physical copy to bring home when he gets the test back, that would be ideal, so we can see what parts he has trouble with and focus more on those.

French Tutoring review by Roshan in South Jordan, UT
This was my last session with this student for the semester. She needed to go over her study guide for her final exam tomorrow. She has made so much progress since her first class, and I am confident that she will do very well on the test!
