Session Summaries by Writing Tutors

Writing Tutoring review by Jennifer in Lyons, IL
He wrote a short story in response to an essay prompt from his exam material. It was good, if unfinished. I introduced him to SAT essay scoring criteria through a website with examples, which we think will be helpful. His father is going to do a timed, 25 minute drill, asking him to write a fast essay. Next week, I plan to help him with writing examples from a narrative-style essay.

Writing Tutoring review by Cynthia in Lyons, IL
First, the student and I discussed Chapter 2 of her history book. She discussed how she felt about the readings. For next week, the student is supposed to write a summary and response essay. The first part will summarize a slam poem; the second, will develop an aspect the student finds particularly illuminating.

Writing Tutoring review by Madeleine in Lyons, IL
The student is struggling with writing in his 10th grade English class. He is very mature and has wonderful thoughts and opinions, but does not always know how to express them in writing/words. He struggles with finding the right word to convey his intended meaning. He also needs to work on transitions (according to his teacher), which seems to me more like how he connects his thoughts/sentences together. For example, he will write 3 sentences in a paragraph that do not necessarily relate in an obvious way to the reader. He also needs to improve his focus and details. He needs to make the connections for his reader and give specific examples rather than general ideas and words. We spent the session reviewing two of his previous essays and I had him practice writing sentences multiple ways then selecting the best version. I also had him explain and be more detailed thereby further developing the thoughts he expressed in each essay. His teacher expects each paragraph to follow "AXES" structure.
