Hello! I'm John Michael, a journalist, author, and educator with 20+ years of experience. My lifelong love of language fosters an enthusiastic, interactive learning environment. I've written for major publications like the New York Daily News, Orlando Sentinel, and Chicago Tribune, and published over 100 short stories in the North American Review, The Iowa Review, and The Kenyon Review, with "The Scratchboard Project" earning an honorable mention in The Best American Short Stories series. I've authored four novels, including the YA novel The Night I Freed John Brown (Penguin Random House), which won the Paterson Prize. I am a current undergraduate student at the University of Central Florida pursuing a bachelor???s in music education. During and prior to my time at UCF, I have worked with music students of all ages, helping them gain insight into technique and practice methods, and volunteered time during high school to acting as a tutor for those struggling in academic subjects. In my time acting as an academic tutor, I have found that I most enjoy assisting students struggling with English and math. With all subjects, but especially in regards to these, I often find that students know more than they believe they do. My aim in teaching is to help students take ownership and pride in what they do well, and begin to use this confidence to establish responsibility for their own learning that will advance their knowledge beyond a classroom setting. I believe that the more control students find they have over their own learning, the more successful they will be. In my spare time I enjoy all sorts of films and TV shows, and doing research for social justice advocacy.

Growing up, I struggled in math. I remember being so nervous when I walked into a math class because I knew I would leave feeling unsure. I never want anyone else to feel that way. After graduation from the University of Central Florida, where I majored in Political Science and International Relations, I began serving with Americorps in the classroom.During my two years of service I taught, you guessed it: MATH. I taught 9th grade Algebra 1. What I realized during this time is that I actually love math. I also learned that sometimes when something comes to us easily, we don't know how to share that knowledge to someone else in a way that is beneficial to them. Because Math did not come to me naturally growing up, I have taught myself and my students in a very specific way. My method of help is simple: I am going to teach you math in the way that makes the most sense to you! I make sure not to overwhelm my students and help understand the "why" behind an answer. I will break down problems to the basics so it is digestable and so you can process the information best. All of the students I have tutored 1:1 have gone on to pass the Algebra 1 EOC Exam, which I attribute to the learning process that takes place in our sessions.

I am a student of the University of Central Florida currently working on a PhD in Digital Media. I am a graduate of the University of Central Florida where i received a double major in Biology and Biomedical Sciences with a focus on Cellular and Molecular Biology and a minor in Chemistry. I am a pre-medical student at the University of Central Florida with a double major in Mathematics and Chemistry. I've always been interested in languages for as long as I remember, likely because of my multicultural background. I was born in Brazil and spent my formative years there, where I learned to speak Portuguese natively. I was raised in a bilingual household where we spoke English and Portuguese all the time. Then at age nine, my family and I relocated to the United States, where we've been ever since. During this time, we lived off the continental US - specifically, Puerto Rico - where I learned to speak Spanish.My love of languages propelled me to receive my Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and French from the University of Central Florida. I have worked with youth for the past six years, and one thing I have found to be consistently true is that no two kids are the same. As a tutor it is really important to not think that just because one method works for one kid that it will automatically work with another. I started out volunteering with an organization called Youth for Christ and discovered that working with youth is what brings me the most joy. These kids required me to not only help the students understand a specific concept but to help them to see the value in understanding the concepts at all.
