Today the student and I completed a draft of his second body paragraph. We focused on creating simple, linear phrasing for sentences meant to support the paragraph's central claim. Nearing the end of the draft, we shifted to think about what argument we want to make in the third paragraph, and then using this knowledge to figure out how the last few sentences of the second paragraph will transition to the third. We then finished drafting the first few sentences of the third paragraph. For homework, he will try to write a first draft of his final body paragraph in preparation for the "home stretch" of writing the conclusion of the essay.

The student and I worked on an outline for a draft/practice introduction for one of the PhD research courses. Her assignment required her to create a research question, intro, and annotated bibliography related to a proposed dissertation topic. We brainstormed a possible topic, a title, a research question, and created an outline for a two-page intro based on her instructor's guidelines. We decided to work on the bibliography next session.

He had a hard time conceptualizing an outline, but once he started writing, he was able to achieve a reasonable paragraph on his own. He's getting better at writing opinions that are backed up by evidence. We wrote on two different prompts, which took the full hour.
