Session Summaries by Pre-Calculus Tutors

Pre-Calculus Tutoring review by Sarah in Prospect Heights, IL
Today, we covered lesson 4.05, 4.06, and 4.07. Between sessions, the student started lesson 4.05 on simple probability. We went over the summary slide and four practice problems as a refresher, and then he took the mid-unit test. The mid-unit test covered permutations, combinations, and simple probability. He received an 8 out of 8 on the test. We then covered lesson 4.06, which included probability and replacement. This lesson took simple probability and introduced the concept of with or without replacement and demonstrated how that impacts the outcome. The student really seems to understand probability and solved all the practice problems on his own! He got a 5 out of 5 on the quiz. We then did lesson 4.07, which covered independent and dependent events. This lesson just built on 4.06, essentially giving a name -- independent and dependent -- to the concept of probability with or without replacement. Again, the student understands it! He got a 5 out of 5 on the quiz with no prompting from me.

Pre-Calculus Tutoring review by Meghan in Prospect Heights, IL
During our session, the student and I began by reviewing her math homework, which was about finding the volume of cones, cylinders, and prisms. She understood her homework well. The only question that she struggled with was finding the height of a cone, when the volume and radius of the base was given. We went through the question step-by-step, and then completed four more of the same type of problems to assure that she was able to do it alone and understand it completely. Next, we returned to combining expressions to project profit. I presented the student with a step-by-step how-to of a problem that I had created, and she was quickly able to create an expression for expenses and profit. She also understood how to combine the expressions to create an expression for profit. We went through the other three problems I had created beforehand, and the student was able to complete all of them without help. Then, we began working on a study guide that she was given last week to work on before a quiz she had taken. These were more complex equations, where the student was asked to combine like terms. She struggled with this. We completed several problems, going over what like terms were and which signs belong with which numbers. For next week, I will create extra practice worksheets that review combining like terms in simple equations so that we may take what she understands from those problems and apply it to more complex problems where she struggles. We will continue to work on having her recognize when it is time to combine versus when it is time to solve our next step, by showing her that the simple and the complex equations require the same skills to be applied. Also, as she was using her calculator this session, I noticed that she was having difficulty finding the correct answers to things she put on the calculator. Instead of typing 3(800)-5(200)+450, she would type 3x800-5x200+450, and come up with a different answer. We discussed the difference, and I will work the importance of the order of operations into each session from now on.

Pre-Calculus Tutoring review by Jonathan in Prospect Heights, IL
The student has a chapter test tomorrow, so today's session was all review and practice problems. We covered solving equations with trig functions, using given values of sin/ cos to find other values of the same angle, applying trigonometric identities for computations, and verifying identities. We worked through review sheets he had from class, skipping around in order to review a variety of problems and make sure to recall topics from earlier in the chapter. He felt confident about most of the material and asked several questions about the rest. We also made sure to review his most recent quiz, going over the few parts he was marked off for. He planned on working on the remaining problems in the review sheet to practice before the exam.

The student and I continued with building foundational skills. I pushed her forward into 8th grade math. She struggled a bit with percentages and fractions, but we got through it. Next time I will push her into 9th grade math, and then start building into the precalculus.
