Elementary Math Tutoring review by Matthew in Prospect Heights, IL
We have started moving into basic trig in the student's book. He did a great job. He finished all his homework so for an hour we chose different problems (mostly word problems) and drilled them. He did a great job drawing pictures and finding answers on his own. By the end of the session I was confident that he could answer any of the questions from that chapter.

We worked on new Geometry material. The student learned the Pythagorean theorem and we practice so that she could master it. She seems to understand really well.

• I started the session with going through postulates and theorems. I wanted to make sure that the student understood them all. I also printed out and gave him a sheet with the major ones used in proofs. We then went through a proof together. We then reviewed the next chapter he will be entering into, trig. I brought a couple of worksheets to work with him on trig. He got through them pretty quickly. We got through all of the major concepts. • The student understands the concepts. • I left him a couple of worksheets to do for homework.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Kendra in Prospect Heights, IL
During today's session we continued to work through the semester review for the student's Algebra II final. We covered topics such as trigonometric functions, the laws of sines and cosines, and summing infinite series. We also reviewed some basic concepts of probability and she answered some related questions. I would tie concepts together and try to show the logical relationships between mathematical ideas. For next session, we plan to finish the study guide, then I plan to briefly review the material we have worked on together, to make sure she has retained the key concepts.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Armon in Prospect Heights, IL
Today, we discussed concepts in sequences and series related to terminology, convergence tests for sequences and related series, divergence tests for general sequence-based series, and special series (including: telescoping sequences, alternating series, p-series, harmonic series). As we were going through the problems, we hit some roadblocks. Each time this occurred, I used it as an opportunity to stress the importance of understanding each of the sequence and series convergence/divergence, ratio test, comparison test, etc. We kept a book as reference for checking back to examine the various tests, and were trying to get a sense of the patterns present for these types of problems' solutions. Given that we had not covered any of chapter 11 problems, I was glad to see that there was no one area really lacking from any of the 11.1-11.7 sections. We only spent an hour, but we used it as efficiently as we could. We performed 2-3 problems from 11.2, 11.4, 11.5, and 11.6. After we had finished, we talked about the problems in retrospect. I told the student during the session that he should expect some sort of manipulation or simplification steps before taking the limit of the series, then examine his simplified sequence, and explore one of approaches to determine series convergence or divergence. I provided the student with a supplemental handout I created, so that he can improve his understanding of the Chapter 11 core, and his speed during completing problems.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Sarah in Prospect Heights, IL
I met with the student to review the material for his math exam on Thursday. He is working primarily with fractions. We began with the division and multiplication of fractions, and then continued into the addition and subtraction of fractions. He has a very solid grasp of mathematics, and was able to do most of the problems with little difficulty. The greatest challenge for him was remembering which operations required which steps (for example, whether the multiplication of fractions required equal denominators.) He also would occasionally struggle to recall his multiplication facts on the spot. He said that this is something with which he has always had a bit of difficulty-- remaining fresh on the larger multiplication facts. However, he was able to compute large sums accurately and quickly, so although greater familiarity might enhance his comfort in math, I don't see this difficulty being too great a hindrance to his performance. At the end of the session I composed a review sheet combining everything that he had practiced so that he would have to recall which problems required which steps. I left the student with a chart to fill in regarding which operations require which steps. We are going to continue with our practice on Wednesday.
