The student and I worked on reading, writing, and math this session. We reviewed an assignment of his where he is tasked with researching a famous person. We researched Matt Holliday and he wrote facts about him using proper capitalization and punctuation. He also had a math worksheet where he quickly wrote down ways to make 10. He used a specific strategy to accomplish this: he started with 1, 2, 3, 4 and paired those numbers with the proper numbers to make 10. Math is a strength of his.

Student 1 and I worked on monitoring, highlighting, and summarizing to analyze and comprehend a grade level scientific text on matter forms. Then we analyzed key differences in the text using a t-chart, then we answered questions about the text. While reading, we worked on decoding skills including identification of word clues that indicate short and long vowels. We then worked on multiplication facts and I taught him a trick to remember his 9s. Student 2 and I worked on reading comprehension, summarizing, decoding, identifying key details in the text, and inferences using a scientific story about lions. Then we reviewed money concepts and worked on a matching activity based on adding skills. Behavior was focused, and we accomplished a great deal of work. Continue reading daily!

The student is working on her sight words and has shown greater recall but she is not as fluent or confident when reading from a book that has these common words. So, we continue to practice oral reading. She is blending words with more fluency and we play matching games where she is to find an initial blend to match with an ending that creates a word. We did sentence dictation using some of these words as well as some of the first grade sight words.
