I'm a Mechanical Engineering student at Florida Institute of Technology, working toward a bachelor's and aiming for a master's with a focus in Robotics. I have experience tutoring Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Calculus 1, and Calculus 2 through study sessions I organized for classmates. My undergraduate degree in Math Education is from Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Florida. I have two master's degrees, one in Computer Resources and Information Management and the other in Educational Leadership from the University of Texas.I am passionate about teaching and tutoring middle and high school math. Hello, my name is Michael Leard, I am currently a junior at Florida Institute of Technology where I am pursuing Aerospace Engineering. I enjoy outdoor/water activities such as hiking, swimming, and SCUBA diving. I also enjoy physics and math.I have taken math classes up until Differential Equations, and physics classes up until special relativity. Calculus I (Calculus AB AP) is my most experienced class. I have taken the AP exam where I earned a 3 and decided to retake in college where I earned a B. I continued to tutor many of my friends in Calculus I where their grades also turned out to be very successful.

I have been teaching for over 18 years. I have taught middle-school, high-school, and college-level Computer Science and Business classes. I have tutored elementary, middle-school, and high-school students in math and algebra. My teaching philosophy centers around creating a supportive learning environment that empowers students to become confident problem solvers. The biggest thing I focus on is learning about my student. Every student has different needs and ways that they learn, and once I figure that out, the student will be more successful. I am a graduate of both Florida Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Boston University with a Master of Science in Physics.During my time as a graduate student at Boston University I worked in both classroom environments and one-on-one with physics students, as well as in the classroom with the Graduate STEM Fellows in K-12 Education (GK-12) program. As a BU Teaching Fellow I was responsible for leading discussion groups, working with students individually during office hours, and as a GK-12 fellow I spent a semester teaching with a high school physics teacher in the classroom.Because my physics background entails studying a wide variety of math backgrounds I am qualified to tutor most subjects in both math and science. I most enjoy teaching calculus and physics because I find it beautiful how well they integrate with and play off of each other. Calculus is the language that describes physics, and a large part of physics is calculus applied to the world.I like to begin engaging with students by seeing what stumbling blocks they are facing educationally and then finding ways to communicate and work through these ideas and processes. I think that understanding subjects like math and science can help you open up new pathways of understanding in the world, as well as improving critical thinking and problem solving.In my spare time I like to go cycling, rock climbing, and play billiards. All three of these activities I use as avenues to find and deepen my own focus. The bicycle is a device that is meant to make life easier, but allows the rider to make the experience as physically challenging as possible. I find that both rock climbing and billiards are a wonderful mixture of accuracy, finesse, strategic thinking and creative problem solving.

I am one year from completing my Bachelor of Science at the Florida Institute of Technology. I am majoring in both Astronomy and Astrophysics, as well as Planetary Science; with a minor in Computer Science. Upon completion of my Bachelor degree I plan on pursuing a Masters degree, most likely in Physics, Exoplanetary Studies, or Engineering Physics. I find that most students struggle in math and physics because they lack true engagement towards these topics, it is my personal philosophy that how you learn a subject can immensely impact your abilities to succeed in and willingness to pursue related subjects in your academic career. I earned my Master's degree in Professional Behavior Analysis from Florida Institute of Technology. I am currently a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and have obtained most of my experience working with children and adults with developmental disabilities. As a naturalized citizen of the United States of America, I am very passionate about helping student improve their communication skills both in Spanish and English. When I came to the US from Barranquilla, Colombia, I didn't want to learn English; so, I became a truck driver 18-wheleer in Miami, Florida. Even though I was doing great, after four years driving trucks, I decided to relocate to Palm Bay, Florida, and join the United States Army as a paratrooper of the 82nd Airborne Division. During my active-duty time in the US Army, I earned my Associate in Arts degree at Campbell University in North Carolina. Then, I went back to Palm Bay to pursue my bachelor's degree in Communication at Florida Institute of Technology, where I graduated magna cum laude in 2003.After graduating in Florida Tech as a communicator, I started writing for the local daily newspaper FLORIDA TODAY in the business section. While working there as an intern, I started my own bilingual newspaper AL DIA TODAY. Then, 9 years later, I graduated with my master's degree in Global Strategic Communication in 2013, also at Florida Tech. The same year, I founded the Brevard Hispanic Center, a non-profit organization under the 501 c 3 code of the IRS that helps individuals and families in areas of education, health, family issues, immigration, and economic empowerment. At the Brevard Hispanic Center, I created the English Language Integration Program (ELI Program) to help individuals that went to school in other countries while improving their level of English, so they could work in the US in their careers.Currently, I am pursuing my PhD in Text and Technology at the University of Central Florida. I continue publishing the bilingual newspaper AL DIA TODAY and providing digital marketing solutions to businesses and organizations. Besides tutoring at Varsity Tutors, I serve my community through the Brevard Hispanic Center.
