Session Summaries by Mandarin Chinese Tutors

Mandarin Chinese Tutoring review by Marcella in Prospect Heights, IL
In our second session this week, the student was able to complete all of his weekly assignments focusing on new material, primarily the introduction of reflexive verbs in the Present tense. The student admitted to me at the beginning of our session that he had not fully understood the lesson in class, so I began by reviewing the handout with him and completing the remainder of the practice exercises. As we worked through his assignment, I noticed the student actively comprehending the material and paying attention to detail, such as asking me about spelling changes I had pointed out earlier in our session. His assignment also included some exercises working with the Preterite, Direct and Indirect Object Pronouns, which were all good practice for his re-take Ch. 10 this week. I was pleased when the student expressed to me that he felt more confident in the Ch. 10 material now. Again, I encouraged him to continue making and reviewing vocabulary term flashcards a little every night.

Mandarin Chinese Tutoring review by Shalon in Prospect Heights, IL
The student and I worked on the song that she has to memorize and recite for class. She is doing very well with this song. She is still having some pronunciation issues which we continue to work on. The Spanish vowels trip her up when she gets to words she doesn't know. I did let her know that I felt she was ready to recite the song to her teacher for a grade, however it is not officially due until May 26th, and if she wanted to work on it with me again then that would be fine. We also began working on chapter 6.2 in her text. I quizzed her on all her new vocabulary as well as quizzed her with questions about what does she want or like to eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This really enabled her to use her vocabulary and new verbs to create sentences and conversation. Toward the end of the session, we started on commands with a quick intro and explanation on how to formulate the command words. We will continue with these next week.

Mandarin Chinese Tutoring review by Anna in Prospect Heights, IL
We began our session tonight with some introductory questions about the student's Spanish class and her goals for tutoring. She has a speaking test coming up this week, which consists of a 3-minute conversation with a partner. This conversation needs to include certain grammatical structures, like "tener phrases," "tener que + infinitive," "ir a + infinitive" and "ir a + places." She needed a review of the meanings of each structure as well as how to conjugate the verbs "tener" and "ir," but she quickly picked up how to form phrases such as "I have to sleep," "You are going to dance" etc. I also sent her a notes worksheet with all the "tener" phrases so she can practice memorizing those. During our review, we also brainstormed questions for her speaking test and possible answers. We spent the last few minutes doing a practice conversation. I advised her to spend time forming as many sentences as she could, and gave her some tips for how to handle the speaking test environment. She has a very positive attitude toward learning, and I am excited to work with her more!
