Tutoring review by Terry in Prospect Heights, IL
I wanted to see how the student responded to grade-level questions on geometry and measurement topics in an actual problem set, so I had her work with me through two problem sets online. She was very quick at the geometry questions. We moved into an online problem set on reading analog clocks and calculating elapsed time. She was able to read and calculate time with reminders about each hand and with direction to read the minutes first.

During today's lesson, the student and I reviewed many properties of equality and number properties. For number properties we covered associative, cumulative, distributive, multiplicative inverse, multiplicative identity, etc. For properties of equality we covered reflexive, transitive, symmetric, additive, multiplicative, etc. The student went over many practice problems and problems he had missed on his "Check Your Mastery" section of his Algebra 2 course. We scheduled next week's time, and discussed that the next lesson will cover topics in applying algebra 2 concepts to real-world problems.

Today, we prepared for the student's quiz next Thursday regarding parallel lines and angle theorems. We were almost able to complete his 3.2 worksheet, and we went through the difficult problems that he had questions on. He should be able to finish the rest on his own with no problem. I'm confident he will do well on his test next week.

Tutoring review by Amelia in Prospect Heights, IL
We went over her first full practice test attempt. She did all sections except for math--she attempted half of the questions. Then we went over the problems she answered incorrectly in all sections, and focused the last hour on just math. We went over practice problems together and one by one talked about the concepts they were testing on, and reviewed those concepts again in full if she was unfamiliar. These included scientific notation, angles of a triangle, probability, and proportions.

Today we worked on reviewing the student's Harvey Milk paper. This focused mostly on matching details from his outline to the paper as well as grammar and sentence structure. We also talked about the importance of following through with strategies and collaboratively developed plans that we make together. This relates to being held accountable as he implements them. He worked on his last reading assignment for his current novel. This included looking back in the text to refresh his memory and occasionally re-reading parts. Before he started reading, he and I read over the directions/ questions. This focused his attention while he was reading/ re-reading to find the answer. He took his time to write neatly and only a few times had to re-write words/ letters. I look forward to hearing how he did on his chunked schedule to finish his assignment over the weekend.

The student is working on reading credit card statements and computing remaining balance. We reviewed several worksheets he had in his folder. His main problem is knowing the vocabulary: balance, credit, payment, annual, finance charge. He read over the vocabulary on his bell worksheets. I role played borrowing money and having him decide whether a payment, finance charge, or credits were added or subtracted from the balance. On his worksheets, he wrote out equations and can accurately compute on his calculator. We also practiced multiplication of decimals.
