Tutoring review by Joanna in Albany, CA
Today, I administered a test to the student based on the subjects we had worked on in the past few weeks: functions, factoring, systems of equations, and absolute value functions. We spent most of the first hour on this, and I see I may have made it too hard. As such, I will make it a little easier with less work next time. She said that it wasn't the difficulty that took time, it was the amount of work that went into some of the questions. After the test, we completed the matrix topic, going over transformations with matrices as well as solving matrix equations, both scalar and with inverses. Then I gave her a sheet that starts looking at parent functions and their domains, ranges, and asymptotes. We will look further into this next time and start quadratic equations.

We went over old exams where the student did not perform well. Word problems and forming equations to relate the problems were covered. The student was struggling at first but understood more as the session went on. I asked him to complete the assignments given by his school, and we will go over anything he does not understand next session.

The student is ready for the SSAT! We reviewed verbal skills and a little math. We also went over strategies and ideas for making the most of the test. It's important that she budget her time well for each section and that she answer the easy questions for sure. She needs to pay close attention when bubbling, especially if she skips questions.
