The student had a more difficult worksheet than the previous 2 so we focused on the process of solving the different problem categories. We have done these problem types before, so this was a review of the solution process. There were only a few areas where he had difficulty remembering the solution process, so we focused on more practice at these type of problems rather than practicing the ones he knew. He has his test on Wednesday so I've asked him to review this worksheet tomorrow night as well.

Tutoring review by Melania in San Leandro, CA
Student 1: Student 1 and I focused on review in preparation for her upcoming exam. We went through some review packets she had and focused on some problems she had questions on or needed to correct. I then created a series of additional practice problems to review converting between metric units. We then reviewed some problems using fractions. Student 2: Student 2 and I also focused on her exam review problems. Overall, Student 2 did very well on these problems. We discussed alternate ways to solve a problem that would save steps and save time on the exam.

Tutoring review by Michael in San Leandro, CA
The student was doing homework on the topic of finding the distance between two points, as well as the midpoint of lines. We discussed how the distance formula was actually a specific case of the Pythagorean theorem. I asked her how she thought the midpoint should be calculated. At first, she suggested that the distance of a line be cut in half, which was actually a good, true notion, however, I then asked her how we could find what the exact point was, in reference to the two end points, rather than simply stating a distance with no direction or location. She then formulated (or remembered prior teaching) that half of the change in "x", and half of the change in "y" would then get you the middle of each distance in each dimension. Some further discussion led her to the realization that from there, to find the absolute location of the new midpoint in reference to the (0,0) origin, it would have to be added to the original point's starting location. We worked through many problems in each topic and she did well learning the method and solving, but I needed to keep pushing her to check her answers by using diagrams. She could recognize that her calculation was a bit off very quickly by plotting everything, and then she could fix her own problem, so I strongly suggested she diagram the problems first, until she mastered the methods.
