SSAT Tutoring review by Samir in Provo, UT
Today, the student and I worked on the math section after reviewing the reading passages I gave her for last week's homework assignment. We focused today on geometry, specifically on two-dimensional figures, including circles, triangles, squares, rectangles, trapezoids, and parallelograms. We spent additional time on 30-60-90 and 45-45-90 triangles, specifically learning side ratios. She is attentive and seems to pick up new topics quickly. I've assigned her problems involving basic plane geometry, and will be delving into properties of circles, coordinate geometry, and three-dimensional figures. I have also given her more words and roots, prefixes, and suffixes to memorize. Good work this lesson!

Today, we reviewed the root word flashcards that we made from our previous session. The main focus of today was simply to go over arithmetic. We practiced addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, and fractions. The plan for the math section is to review all the fundamental skills and then delve into more challenging mathematics. Following the math section, we began working on analogies from the verbal portion of the SSAT. We practiced analogy strategies for the remainder of the session. I provided the student with the remainder of root words that he needs to study. I left him with a good amount of practice problems, which we will discuss when we come together again.

SSAT Tutoring review by Bailey in Provo, UT
Today, we took a break from math to work on some verbal and reading skills. We started by working with analogies. The analogies that we worked with today all fell under the category of "determining meaning from type of relationship." We looked at analogies that touched on cause and effect, example and category, part/part, and part and a whole. The student did very well on these problems. We moved on to reading skills next. We looked at poetry, reading a portion of Faust. She then answered questioned about authorial purpose and tone, finding context passed on words and phrases the author uses, made inferences, and evaluated opinions. We wrapped up the session by reviewing synonyms, specifically focusing on emotional adjectives.
