Session Summaries by Calculus Tutors

Calculus Tutoring review by Edward in Provo, UT
We covered optimization word problems and problems where we had to find local maxes and minimums. The student didn't seem to struggle with the math aspect much, but sometimes had trouble determining what to do after reading the problem. However, once he knew what to do, he had little trouble executing. Like always, he remained very motivated throughout the session and was great to work with.

Today the student and I worked on a take home test that had been assigned to him that dealt with integration by parts, u substitution and trig integration. He is getting better at the material but still needs practice. Where he struggles most is in starting problems, he knows the material once it's initiated but it takes a while to organize himself. This will get better the more he practices the different techniques.

Calculus Tutoring review by Spencer in Provo, UT
The student and I reviewed a selection of problems from his online homework. It mostly covered applications of derivatives, graphing, and finding extrema with the first and second derivative test. His struggle today was mostly with when to use what technique. I tried to emphasize what each method really did and why we want to use it.

During today's lesson the student and I covered Elasticity, which is a just an application of calculus in business. We spent almost the entire time on this subject actually but it did involve some other concepts like taking the derivative of e. Other than taking the derivative of q the problem just involves plugging in values and understanding what the result means in terms of elasticity. We also finished up inflection points which was started last lesson. He is sharp and able to do math quickly in his head. Our focus remains translating word problems into math equations.

Calculus Tutoring review by Asya in Provo, UT
This was the first time that I met with the student. We first discussed what she felt her problems were and then looked over her class notes. I suggested getting one of her old tests to see where she made errors and then correcting them. Our discussion focused on the application of limits and continuity, as always, favoring a graphical approach.

Calculus Tutoring review by Brent in Provo, UT
First of all, I was thrilled to hear that the student earned an A on her last test (and, more importantly, so was she)! She described how she is glad (proud) that despite it being her second semester of senior year (when many develop 'senioritis') she is continuing to do well, and even improve. I couldn't agree more; I am also very proud of the work she's put in and her phenomenal attitude throughout the entire process. Now, on to the session... During our session, we were able to get through all the vital skills and concepts. She is completely "on top of" (and even slightly ahead of) the class material. Christina has mastered exponential functions and their derivatives. After reviewing exponentials, we focused on trigonometric integrals (her weak point). We came up with mnemonic devices to remember the tricky antiderivatives of tangent, cotangent, secant, and cosecant--as well as their variations. She is in a terrific place in her calculus heading into spring break; no one is more deserving of a break than this student, who was again on top of her game in spite of her illness.
