Session Summaries by Math Tutors

Math Tutoring review by Victoria in Provo, UT
During this session, we reviewed converting decimals into fractions. We focused a lot of attention converting repeating decimals into fractions and differentiating between repeating and non-repeating decimals. We also discussed the differences between whole numbers, integers, and rational numbers and the properties of each category. We did a lot of practice identifying which categories certain numbers fall into. She has a quiz over this material on Monday, and she said she felt well prepared for the quiz after our session.

Math Tutoring review by Steve in Provo, UT
We went over basic trig functions and reviewed more exponential/logarithmic problems today. Then, we went back and did some advanced algebra questions to work on algebra skills such as factoring and expanding polynomials. The student is making great progress and he feels confident going into his first day of class. I also believe that he has a solid understanding of algebra concepts, and now should focus on practicing to achieve a certain level of skill and mastery.

The student needed help with Algebra 2. We worked on his homework assignment for multivariate factoring and division. He did well on the assignment, he just needed me to recheck his answers.

Math Tutoring review by Amir in Provo, UT
The student and I began the session by reviewing the beginning of his chapter 6 to start preparing him for his quiz. We covered the rules behind working with powers and roots of numbers. We then transitioned into checking over his homework assignment for the night that covered inverse functions, and it looked great. We spent the remaining time discussing inverse functions, how to derive them, why they exist, and how to check if two functions are inverses of each other.

Math Tutoring review by Seth in Provo, UT
1. Today, we covered graphing and solving quadratic formulas. As for graphing, we reviewed how to find the x- and y-intercepts and the vertex. I also taught him how to find the quadratic equation when only knowing three points on the graph. As for solving the formulas, we reviewed the different methods for solving for x, and I taught him how to rewrite the quadratic formula to solve by the square-root method. I also taught him that when taking the square root, he must account for both the positive and negative answers. 2. The student is determined to learn and has a positive attitude. He's learning the more advanced concepts. 3. For strategies, I taught him to work with easier numbers when plugging them into equations to make his life easier. I reminded him to be careful with his work in to avoid minor mistakes. 4. He quickly learned the new ways to solve quadratics, to find the quadratic formula when given only three points, and to account for the negative answer when taking square roots. I'm going to send him links to lessons and practice questions on the subjects that he has trouble with.

Math Tutoring review by Spencer in Provo, UT
The student and I covered proofs dealing with parallelograms and constructors (diagrams that are meant to supplement the ideas previously learned). Since she has an upcoming exam, I suggested that we hit as many problems as possible and make notes to reference to any constructors utilized. She received a 92% on her last quiz which is what we expected. She seems to be grasping the material fairly well.
