Session Summaries by PSAT Tutors

PSAT Tutoring review by Charles in Provo, UT
The student worked on some strategies like picking and choosing numbers, annotating what he's reading, and reading the questions prior to reading the passages. He worked on a diagnostic test. I gave him a test to take for homework.

PSAT Tutoring review by Naznin in Provo, UT
This session lasted 1.5 hours and was given online. This session we covered the Form B Practice Exam. We reviewed most of the questions the student had wrong. His main issue is that he tends to become confused when it is a word problem with large numbers. He rushes to complete the question in a timed manner, but doesn't follow through to the last step and just marks the answer. We have also identified that the student has not learned probability and some basic trigonometry needs to be reviewed to prepare him better for the math section of the SHSAT. We will continue to work on this next session.

PSAT Tutoring review by Jordan in Provo, UT
This session was another productive one. The student received a higher score on a practice non-calculator section. She increased by 21% since the first one she took. The questions that she got wrong on the test were broken down and she learned from her mistakes. She will take a full SAT math section before next session. I am seeing a solid improvement week by week, and she is really starting to understand the SAT math section. Overall, this was another great session, and I am looking forward to helping her receive the highest grade that she deserves.

PSAT Tutoring review by Pia in Provo, UT
This session was awesome! We spent most of the time on the English/Writing sections of the SAT. Specifically, we worked with older texts and dealing with when to cut information from passages. Even though the student says math might not be his strong suit, he did really well today, successfully solving a math problem at its highest difficulty level (system of equations style). We also talked a bit about college apps. I left him with the task of knowing the 100 most common words found on the ACT and working through some math exercises that are the backbone of the math section.

PSAT Tutoring review by Krystel in Provo, UT
This session was focused on algebra basics. We reviewed how to manipulate variables, how to solve straightforward equations, how to isolate a variable on one side, how to find value of x, and how to use algebra in word problems. The student was very motivated to do the work. He did take a little long doing some of the word problems, so I gave him the strategy of coming back to a question when he sees he will spend more than a minute on the problem for the sake of time. That way he can get four out of five right instead of one out of five. I left him with some extra practice questions with word problems to focus on. I gave him 29 questions to do in 45 minutes. He still needs a bit of work on budgeting time and writing clear work. We will continue to work on this.

PSAT Tutoring review by Ricardo in Provo, UT
This session was spent trying to find the student's skill level before diving into solid test prep. Her math skills were rusty, especially the more foundational skills in calculation and algebra. She took geometry most recently, and had a familiarity with all the concepts that I raised. We also looked at some reading passages from a practice SAT. She is better with specific questions than with general discussion about the passage. For the SAT, she should treat it not as reading, but as a task: a set of words easily broken up and attacked in small chunks that lead to answers on the test.
