Session Summaries by Geometry Tutors

Geometry Tutoring review by Mariah in Provo, UT
Today was our initial session. She moved from Puerto Rico after the beginning of the school year; unfortunately, she was unable to catch up and fully comprehend the material. She is an A student and never has had a tutor before. English is her second language, and this is the first time that she has had to learn completely in English; much of the vocabulary is unfamiliar to her. She was very responsive to everything we covered in today's session. Some of the concepts included lines, planes, acute and obtuse angles, and some simple algebraic equations.

Geometry Tutoring review by Manwinder in Provo, UT
We reviewed the Pythagorean theorem and reviewed her homework. The hardest part for her was the algebra and simplifying the radical solutions. I asked her to review the squares of 1-15 and try to remember them because she will be using them a lot for this section. We will be meeting on Thursday to review these concepts again to make sure she understands them.

This session, we went over how to find the height or distance of something using angle of elevation and angle of depression. There were one or two I needed to help her set up, but other than that, she did the math just fine. By the end of the session, she was very confident and felt prepared for her test on Tuesday

Geometry Tutoring review by Jacqueline in Provo, UT
We worked on homework - in particular, reflections across the x-axis, y-axis and the line y=x. The student will work on her homework before the next time we meet, so that we can talk about any questions she has in time for her quiz on Thursday.

Geometry Tutoring review by William in Provo, UT
The student is doing very well conceptually. Her class has moved on to chords, secants and tangents. We discussed where her class is currently and her level of understanding and comfort. She had already finished her homework, which was done perfectly. We used our time to discuss upcoming areas, specifically how using tangents to curves allows the introduction of infinitesimals. I gave her a brief overview of differentiation and integration as well as the concepts of limits. We discussed the philosophical and mathematical problems with infinite sums and infinitesimals. She seemed to fully understand and digest even the more difficult concepts. We ended on a discussion of the Riemann Zeta function. I promised the student that I would have the algebra and series information so that I could demonstrate that the root of the function at -1 (1+2+3+4...) is equal to -1/12.
