I'm not that guy! Like many students, understanding comes with repetition of principles and hard work. I have the perspective of a student trying to understand, not a teacher trying to preach. I love working with people from the ground up; we start at the comfort zone and work our way to improvement...

I am from Nashville, Tennessee but have lived in seven different states all over the U.S. I currently attend Brigham Young University and am loving it. I enjoy the one-on-one interaction I get with people when I tutor. Watching people really understand and be excited about learning is what makes it worthwhile for me. The key is to spark the fun and excitement of learning within the student. I have tutored primarily middle and high school students but am comfortable with any age. I tutor many subjects, but am especially proficient in the areas of test preparation, math, and Spanish. I took several AP classes, was on the honor roll, and was blessed to receive a full-tuition National Merit scholarship for college. I currently have an open major but am leaning toward a degree in finance or information systems. I am fluent in Spanish thanks to a two-year mission for my church. Because of this I am now part of a Hispanic volunteer group helping children learn to read more fluently. I played rugby and football, and I love doing things outdoors, whether it be hiking, going to the lake, skiing, or backpacking. I have also traveled to many parts of the world and enjoy having new experiences and learning about other cultures.

I am currently a student at Brigham Young University studying Applied Physics. After finishing my degree I am planning on pursuing a master's degree in Aerospace Engineering. Since January 2014 I have worked in the physics help lab at BYU. Throughout this time I have greatly enjoyed helping many students increase their understanding of physics. I love seeing my students have a "light-bulb" moment where suddenly everything we discussed makes sense to them. I think it is extremely important for everyone to have (at least) a basic understanding of math and science as this helps us to better understand our world. I am greatly motivated to teach in a way that my students understand the fundamental principles and not in a way that they can merely get the right answer. I love trying to pass on my enthusiasm for math and science to my students, and I am always looking for ways to show how cool and fun mastering these subjects can be. Although I am most passionate about physics, I also tutor math and Spanish. When I'm not studying or teaching I enjoy swimming, reading (especially Michael Crichton and Orson Scott Card), and exchanging movie quotes with my roommates. Hobbies: art, movies, reading, swimming, writing, books, music, hiking

I'm Garrett and I live in Salt Lake City and I want to help you understand topics in natural science and mathematics. I have a bachelor's degree in geological science (geophysics) from University of Colorado Boulder with a minor in mathematics. Part of my success in college came from the preparation I had from taking AP Calculus and Physics courses in high school. I'm a huge fan of visual aids and examining real-life examples and applications when teaching. I worked as a learning assistant in an astronomy lab course and as a tutor for student athletes in geology while attending CU. I've been honing the ability to craft perfect analogies to help you make sense of mathematical or physical concepts.

I am dedicated to helping my students achieve their full potential as my own personal goal. When I worked as a tutor at the Burbridge Athletics Academic Center at the University of Utah, where I also earned my Bachelors of Science in Physics, I developed a passion for education, which I intend to continue with now that I have moved to Washington DC. I am able to tutor students in Physics, Mathematics, and Computer Science, having developed experience as part of my pursuit of that degree. I also have an intense interest in History, which I pursued in my general educational requirements of that same degree. I am a kinesthetic learner, and I believe that the best way to develop an understanding of a subject is to do, rather than watch or listen.

Frequently Asked Questions
With a 19.6:1 student-teacher ratio in Holladay schools, personalized 1-on-1 instruction fills an important gap by providing focused attention on each student's unique learning needs. Varsity Tutors connects students with tutors who understand Utah's curriculum standards and can work alongside classroom instruction to strengthen foundational skills, prepare for assessments, and build confidence in challenging subjects.
Holladay students typically seek tutoring in math, science, and English language arts—subjects that build critical thinking skills required for Utah state assessments and college readiness. Tutors also work with students on test preparation, study skills, and subject-specific challenges that emerge across elementary, middle, and high school levels. Whether it's algebra struggles, science concepts, or writing skills, personalized instruction adapts to each student's pace and learning style.
The first session is an assessment and connection opportunity. A tutor will learn about the student's academic goals, current challenges, learning style, and what's working (or not working) in their classroom. This foundation helps the tutor create a personalized plan aligned with the student's school curriculum and timeline, whether that's catching up on skills, preparing for a test, or getting ahead in a subject.
Tutoring rates vary based on the subject, tutor expertise, and frequency of sessions. Varsity Tutors works with families to create flexible tutoring plans that fit different budgets—whether students need weekly sessions for ongoing support or intensive preparation for a specific goal. Contact Varsity Tutors to discuss your student's needs and get a personalized estimate for your situation.
Yes. Tutors who work with Holladay students are familiar with Utah's Core Standards and the state assessments students take at various grade levels. This means they can align tutoring directly with what your student is learning in class and help prepare for Utah-specific benchmarks, giving students a clear path to academic success within our state's framework.
Absolutely. While Holladay's schools work hard with available resources, the 19.6:1 student-teacher ratio means some students benefit from additional one-on-one support outside the classroom. Personalized tutoring provides that dedicated attention, allowing tutors to slow down, repeat concepts, and work at your student's pace—something that's difficult for teachers to do in a full classroom setting.
Varsity Tutors works to connect students with qualified tutors quickly. Once you describe your student's needs and goals, the matching process typically moves fast so your student can start receiving personalized instruction soon. The exact timeline depends on subject, schedule preferences, and tutor availability, but we prioritize getting students the support they need without unnecessary delays.
Tutoring works best as ongoing support. While many Holladay families use tutors for test preparation or to address specific challenges, consistent personalized instruction throughout the year builds stronger foundational skills and confidence. Many students benefit from regular sessions (weekly or bi-weekly) combined with occasional intensive prep for exams, creating a balanced approach to academic growth.
