Session Summaries by Science Tutors

Science Tutoring review by Zoe in Provo, UT
The student and I spent this session reviewing cellular division, specifically mitosis, meiosis, diploid vs. haploid, the components involved in cell division (kinetochores, centrosomes, centromeres, and chromatids), regulation of cell division (checkpoints, CDK-cyclin complexes), apoptosis, and sources of genetic diversity. We were able to go over the free-response questions together, and she had a good understanding of the material. She does have some concerns about the book; overall, it is informative and clear, but some diagrams were confusing for her. I redrew several diagrams to better help her understanding. Next week, we are going to focus on heredity, and I left her with reading and practice problems.

Science Tutoring review by William in Provo, UT
The student and I discussed problems related to finding equilibrium concentrations and pH for various solutions in which acid/base reactions were occurring, particularly monoprotic and diprotic acids and bases. We worked on some problems involving buffers and the Henderson Hasselbach equation. We also discussed how intermediates played a role in determining these equilibria and how to calculate the isoelectric point.

Science Tutoring review by Manuel in Provo, UT
This was my first session with the student. He had expressed being unable to follow the teacher in class so far. He's a bright child with an inquisitive mind. For the session, we worked on the fundamentals of experiment such as independent, dependent, and controlled variables. We then put that knowledge to use when he worked on his virtual enzyme breakdown lab. I just wanted him to get comfortable with the basics of experiments, and I am sure he felt that way.

Science Tutoring review by Brian in Provo, UT
The student had homework on Newton's laws. We reviewed the definition of each and what they mean in simple language. She did well on the practice problems once she figured out how to set them up properly.
