English Tutoring review by Hunter in Provo, UT
I split the time into half, focusing on speaking first and secondly on reading and grammar. The first we looked at different photos, and the student described each photo as best he could. We followed this up with a short discussion about the photos. Next we did a paraphrasing game simulating everyday occurrences in which the student would reword things commonly said in passing. We then switched to a few reading comprehension exercise. The student read the reading sample out loud, working on pronunciation and we would work through the questions together. I left the student with notes on the day's lesson.

English Tutoring review by Kathryn in Provo, UT
The student's homework today was to read a story. She did a great job reading by herself and is starting to pick up on sight words. We discussed the story and I asked her reading comprehension questions, which she answered correctly. I then read her a Curious George story she brought home from school. We again discussed money and the different coins used in US currency. She did great listening to the story and we learned some new vocabulary words like pogo stick, kaleidoscope, and snow globe. She was able to answer reading comprehension questions correctly. She had a great week of tutoring and I'm very impressed with how quickly her reading skills are progressing.

I had the student pick from a list of topics to write either an expository or persuasive essay. He picked a persuasive essay on the educational value of television. He began by writing a thesis statement and brainstorming possible examples for supporting his points. He then began writing the essay. After he wrote a few paragraphs I gave him some feedback. I explained how an introduction should be structured. I also questioned his support in an attempt to get him to think more critically about his points. We will continue working on this and the story next session.

English Tutoring review by Dorit in Provo, UT
In this first lesson, we looked at words with short vowels, we read one text for reading comprehension, a Clifford children's book, and finally we played a game with short words. The student's attention span was great, and she was motivated to work and learn. The session helped me to establish a good understanding of her gaps and needs.

English Tutoring review by Kristin in Provo, UT
This morning I read over some of the student's past essays to get a sense for her writing, led her through a few assessment activities, and then we discussed what she finds challenging about English/ writing. She is a good writer, and very creative, but she struggles a bit in connecting ideas (and relatedly, paragraphs) in her essays. We focused on these issues in an essay that is due Monday in her English class. She is a fast learner and receptive to improving her writing. I think she will be able to improve quickly.

English Tutoring review by Emily in Provo, UT
The student had her homework done for our session; she finished chapter 4 and wrote a beginning middle end summary. Today we discussed her summary for chapter 4 and also discussed meaning and her character sketch on Henry to refresh her memory and prepare for today's reading. We read chapter 5 today stopping for tell-backs and discussions of meaning. We continued to look at goals/problems that the main character needs to solve. For homework, I asked her to read chapter 6 and write a beginning middle end for the chapter. Her BME must include the goal or problem that Henry is trying to achieve or solve. Continuing forward, we will next be moving into a slightly harder book, The Cricket in Times Square. This book will challenge her in vocabulary and continue to build her skills in tell backs and discussions, as well as comprehension.
