Today, we went through the student's Semester Exam guide. For the exam, she will be asked to create a dialogue for getting directions between three people in Peru. We practiced the dialogue in speaking and in writing with the map provided by her teacher.

Spanish Tutoring review by Emily in Provo, UT
The student's Spanish is excellent and she says it improved exponentially while she was on exchange in Spain. Her biggest challenge in preparing for the exam is that she struggles with decontextualized grammar exercises even though she knows the grammar when she hears it or speaks it. We worked on several practice exercises that are decontextualized like the ones she will see on the exam and discussed the reasons why she had to make certain grammar choices. Tomorrow, we will continue to work on some of her areas of greatest need, such as reading comprehension.

The student and I continued to review for his Spanish exam. I created sentences in English for him to translate, and we went over reflexive verbs, indirect objects, direct objects, and pronoun placements in sentences. We also went over vocabulary from the units and using para que and antes (de) que.

Spanish Tutoring review by Avery in Provo, UT
In this session, the student and I focused on the subjunctive vs indicative for his upcoming quiz. He fully understood how to conjugate verbs for the subjunctive mood. However, the concept for the subjunctive was more challenging. Because the subjunctive is not used with the same frequency in English that it is in Spanish, the uses and reasons can be difficult to grasp. We created a list of expressions that are always used for the subjunctive. This list will help him to prepare and study for the test. We also utilized the PowerPoint provided by his teacher to go over the indicative, subjunctive, and the uses of each. We wrapped up by reviewing the commands and going through an online quiz that tested his knowledge of all of the forms.

Spanish Tutoring review by Quiana in Provo, UT
The student received a 79 on her last exam. She and I went over her packets for the final exam, as she has opted in to take it. She was given 3 packets, all of which had extensive vocabulary lists, a section on grammar, and practice worksheets. As long as she remembers conjugations for preterite/ imperfect, commands, and past participle, she will be fine. I also gave her some notes for affirmative and negative commands with direct objects. She will be seeking additional help in class on Wednesday and creating flashcards for all of her vocabulary.
