Session Summaries by Reading Tutors

Reading Tutoring review by Raven in Provo, UT
The student and I are continuing to work on reading and reading strategies. His mother informed me that he is still struggling with blends and adding e to the end of words, so we spent a majority of our time working on this. We also worked on a Henry and Mudge reading comprehension packet. He will read a chapter every time we meet and answer the questions. I am also working with him on reading fluency because I believe this is what is keeping him from moving up a reading level.

Reading Tutoring review by Shaina in Provo, UT
During this session, the student read various fiction and nonfiction books focusing on fluency and comprehension skills. The focus skills included making connections, summarizing important details, independently decoding words, and previewing and making predictions about the text before reading. All in all, she did very well with these concepts, especially since she was reading higher level texts. She was able to independently decode words and did very well with summarizing important details after reading a nonfiction text. She was able to make connections after reading but still needs work with expanding on those connections. We will continue to work on these skills during our next session. I left some materials for her to practice reading until then.

Reading Tutoring review by Bryce in Provo, UT
The student and I began reading her 'easy reader' books in today's session. As the session went on, she began to loosen up, and her reading improved with each book. She read about fifteen of these all together, and by the final book "I Spy," she was back to herself, enjoying reading and being silly.

Reading Tutoring review by Raymond in Provo, UT
We covered reading comprehension passages and strategies. The student had a homework passage that we completed, and I brought two worksheets. The multiple choice one he completed in just a few minutes, but the short answer questions seemed to be much more difficult for him. It helped when we started discussing the passages and related them to his life. I started teaching him simple comprehension strategies, such as underlining the answer in the passage and eliminating incorrect answers.

Reading Tutoring review by Nancy in Provo, UT
The student continues to stay focused, and always puts forth a great effort. Today we worked on long vowel sounds. We added the correct vowel for each word. She was able to do this with little assistance. We addressed rhyming words again. She started slowly, but began to catch on to rhyming as we went along. I gave her four words and she was able to give me rhyming words for three during a follow up to the lesson. I had her do a beginning reader story. It was repetitive and she was able to read the text independently by the end. I noted she remembers a lot of her sight words from school. She retains information very well. She read a book to my therapy dog who was sitting next to the computer. This will be an ongoing beginning for our sessions.
