Phonics Tutoring review by Shannon in La Habra, CA
The student started "The Adventures of Jo Schmo." He read excellently. We discussed the plot together and I helped him read between the lines before he wrote about the characters. His writing was very sharp and I helped him correct his spelling of a few words. Last, we went over words containing "ind," "ine," and alternate pronunciations of "ch." We talked about reading and writing activities that he would enjoy more in our lessons. He said that he likes to write stories, so next class I will help him plan and write a story. I asked him to remember to bring the Captain Underpants book, but I will check out another copy in case he doesn't.

Phonics Tutoring review by Colleen in La Habra, CA
In today's session, we reviewed numbers, both in order and in isolation. We ordered the numbers onto a number line and used the number line as an aid to discuss the concepts of addition and subtraction. I really tried to get the student to focus on using the number line to add and subtract, instead of her fingers, so that she could recognize and apply the concept rather than just memorizing numbers. After a few rounds of practice, she got the hang of adding and subtracting on the number line. Then we moved onto a number matching game, where she matched number digits to images that served as representations of numbers. She did really well with this concept. We then reviewed time telling by matching analog clocks to digital clocks, and by drawing the hands on clocks to make certain times. We wrapped up by reading a new level B reader called "What Is Hot?"

Phonics Tutoring review by Adriane in La Habra, CA
The student and I played an addition/subtraction game on a number line today, then complicated her favorite coin conversion game by adding half dollar and dollar coins. We took turns rolling dice, and then added the rolled amount into our "banks" while converting various denominations and returning change. Increasing the amount allowed us to convert much larger numbers, and gave her an opportunity to use some higher addition skills. We finished by reading a few books, including a new book from the Elephant & Piggie series called "I Broke My Trunk!"
